The trend in makeup and skincare over the past few years has been increasingly toward “natural”–as in chemical-free, mineral-based, and anything that can conjure up images of “green” or “organic”. But this fall, the word natural is all about the look as neutral palettes serve up the basis for both day and night color.
Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Stila, Lorac, Trish McEvoy and just about every other makeup brand are showing fall collections with names like “Canyon” or “Tortoise Shell” that take their cue from nature. Most include a range of earthy tones that go from sheer washes of color to more metallic golds, coppers and silvers.
Daytime looks are muted, but with hints of color. Think soft rosy cheeks or nude lips with a hint of pink thrown in. It’s an easy to convert to nighttime look as the key to fall color for night is impact–either retro eyeliner looks (think cat eyes), punches of bold color for eyes, and rich tones of red, plum or even orange for lips.
Nars is showing a super shock-worthy blue called Outremer that’s incredibly intense but comes across as wearable when teamed up with an otherwise downplayed neutral look. Ditto Make Up For Ever’s smoky eye look–it’s deep and bold but it’s the focal point on an otherwise more naturally toned down look.
Given that many of fall’s evening looks require a bit more daring–not everyone can master a smoky eye, Bardot liner or orange lips–the best way to sample the shades and find out what works best is to get out there and try them. Luckily for Bobbi Brown fans in the Newark, NJ area, the Bobbi Brown flagship studio is right over at Lackawanna Plaza in Montclair. To try out Stila or Nars, head over to Sephora at either Garden State Plaza in Paramus or Willowbrook Mall in Wayne.
If you’re wanting to create this fall’s looks on more of a drugstore budget, try out the always neutral shade palette by Physician’s Formula which is available at most local drugstores including Rite-Aid, Walgreen’s and CVS. Or, try Beauty Addicts which has a range of earthy/neutral shades and is available both online and at DePasquale Salon Systems on Broadway in Fair Lawn.
