So, you have a child at home who is a young aspiring musician. They are a part of their school’s band or orchestra program. They love their instrument. They love to practice. They are actually getting quite good at it. If this describes your child, they might be yearning for more musical experiences. There are two after school music programs in the area that have many offerings for your child.
The first after school music program is in the midtown area of Detroit. It is the Detroit Community Music School. It is an extension of the Michigan State School of Music and it is located on Woodward Avenue just two blocks south of Mack Avenue. They have offerings for all ages, from birth to adult, and for all skill levels from beginner to advanced. The Community Music School (CMS) is still in its infancy. It has only been around for a few years. There has been substantial growth during that time. The program that would best suit the young musicians earlier mentioned in this article is the Aspiring Musicians Programs. They are one hour group lessons specifically for the instrument that your child is playing. Also, if mom and dad are inspired to follow Junior’s lead, the CMS offers many adult programs for beginners.
If you are willing to drive a little ways, go north on I-475 and exit on Longway Boulevard. Right there at the corner is the Flint Cultural Center which houses the Flint Institute of Music. Like the CMS, the Flint Institute of Music (FIM) has many different offerings for all ages and skill levels. The author of this article has had family members be participants in many different programs at the FIM. The FIM has been around for many years and has served many people throughout the state. There was a family that regularly drove two hours, one way, to participate in their programs. For the school age child, they have private lessons on any instrument. The instructors are highly trained and many of them are also members of the Flint Symphony Orchestra. The FIM also offers ensembles for band and orchestra.
If you have a child that needs more to their instrumental music education, it is highly recommended by this author that you investigate the offerings of these two establishments. Music education opens many different doorways for children and enhances their academic learning.
