In recent years a great deal more research has been done, to study the effects of maternal stress on babes still in the womb. In the US, the March of Dimes (http://www.marchofdimes.com/lifechanges_indepth.html) has a mission to help women have healthier pregnancies and healthier babies. Some of the research found on their website pertains to premature and lower weight births, due to stress. Some studies have even indicated findings of stress related learning disorders, including but not limited to ADD, in children born of a chronic stress pregnancy. There are multiple Research grantees listed on their website that claim these findings, however the two I found to be more in depth were: Institute of Medicine Committee on Understanding Premature Birth and Assuring Healthy Outcomes, Board on Health Sciences Policy, Behrman, R.E., and Butler, A.S. (eds.). Preterm Birth: Causes, Consequences, and Prevention. Washington, DC, The National Academies Press, 2006 and Glynn, L.M., et al. When Stress Happens Matters: Effects of Earthquake Timing on Stress Responsivity in Pregnancy. American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, volume 184, number 4, March 2001, pages 637-642.
In an article by Lucy Ward, Social Affairs Correspondent for The Guardian in May of 2007, she published findings in the Clinical Endocrinology Journal (http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2007/may/31/childrensservices.medicine…). These studies showed that the unborn child experienced the stress the mother did as early as 17 weeks, by doing a blood test on the mother experiencing chronic stress and the amniotic fluid, to determine levels of Cortisol in each. Additional research is needed, but they feel the correlation is there to warrant recommending Yoga and other holistic approaches to stress reduction and management in pregnant women.
Every new mother desires to enjoy a healthy pregnancy and give birth to a full term healthy baby. For many years, society had departed from what came natural to expectant mothers, to protect their unborn child at all cost. With a return to natural and holistic healing, there are more opportunities for mothers-to-be. Expecting Well Maternity Spa and Wellness Center at 514 Gervais St. Suite A Columbia SC is everything natural and healthy that expectant mothers could ask for. Whether it is in nutritional counseling, Yoga classes or Massage Therapy, they have every service to promote a low stress, wonderful journey through your pregnancy.
I was also pleased to see that they offer Infant Massage as well, since I took Family and Infant Massage classes in 1983 and utilized these techniques myself with all four of my children and my grandchildren as well. It is common knowledge that the birth experience is a stressful event for your baby, so setting an appointment for your new little one, and taking one of their classes to continue massage at home is something I personally believe in and would highly recommend. With the baby oils now offered with Lavender and Chamomile this would be an excellent choice for your massage time with your new little one, as it will enhance relaxation and calm, and build beautiful bonding moments for you and your baby.
