Epic Games’ Rod Fergusson hopped on a video chat to talk with fans of the Gears of War series about what their plans are for unlocks in the Gears finales and revealed new unlock promotions for golden weapons and upcoming plans for XP events for Gears of War 2.
Epic is seeking to reward those have played Gears of War 2 in a dedicated fashion. So, those that earn the Veteran Gear status in Gears of War 2 can garner not just one but five golden weapons for Gears of War 3. To earn the Veteran Gear achievement, players must reach level 100 and win a match on each of the four Snowblind map pack maps. Currently on 2% of the Gears of War 2 population have reached this achievement.
That won’t be the only reward for Veteran Gears though they will automatically unlock the Old Guard medal and a title to indicate that they are a Veteran Gear. Originally, Fergusson wanted to just offer a Gold Gnasher due to how attractive the Gold Lancer and Gold Hammerburst were to players in Gears of War 2. However, he felt like it wasn’t enough for those that had showed the level of loyalty to the game. So, Veteran Gears will now get the Gold Lancer, Gold Retro Lancer, Gold Hammerburst, Gold Sawed-off and the Gold Gnasher.
Players can still get the golden weapons individually from other promotions already announced for Gears of War 3. However, the Gold Gnasher will also be available for anyone that plays during the first week after the game launches on September 20. This way, players can still get the Gold Gnasher even if they don’t get the Veteran Gear achievement. They just won’t be able to get the other four golden weapons unless they performed the requirements for those as well.
As a recap, the Gold Retro Lancer was only achievable during the Gears of War 3 beta for those that complete 90 matches to first unlocked it and then scored 100 kills with it. The Gold Sawed-off is tied to the Commando achievement in the original Gears of War. Meanwhile, the Gold Lancer and Gold Hammerburst are available to players who had those weapons if Gears of War 2.
Epic is also going to help those that haven’t reached the Veteran achievement yet by hosting XP weekends for Gears of War 2 for every weekend until Gear of War 3 launches. So, that will be five straight weekends of extra XP but Fergusson wouldn’t reveal what the multipliers will be yet.
