The Living Room Café and Bistro (http://livingroomcafe.com/) is a coffeehouse legend to any San Diego area college student, as one of the most popular sayings overheard on the SDSU, UCSD or any of the local junior college campuses, is, “See you later at the Living Room!”
With locations in National City, Point Loma, Old Town, La Jolla and the SDSU area open until midnight or later most nights, they have a captive audience for the local college students. The food items here vary very much by location, time of year and special but overall, for the study break, it accomplishes the main objective of fueling the brain cells. So what’s the coffee like? I said it was a legend, right?
One of the nicest things about the Living Room are the number of choices even the most finicky of coffee snobs can try before falling for one of their brews. This snob is head over heels for the Trembler flavored with Sugar-Free Caramel syrup (other SF flavors include vanilla, hazelnut, additional varieties by location as well). If you are looking for a caffeine jolt, as the name refers, you are most likely to experience a few aftershocks.
The last location visited was in Old Town location in the middle of July and there was plenty of seating available inside the restaurant to get a great coffee experience. The time of year probably had something to do with the fact that the place was not filled with circling college co-eds madly jumping at the chance of any open seat and table. But the establishment also had various signage posted requesting patrons to move on if they were finished with their food and/or beverage and allow seating for others. Whatever your idea is for a coffee experience, without question, can be found at the Living Room.
Beatnik poets reading aloud from pocket-sized notepads, struggling musicians playing an acoustic guitar outside for a small group of beanie-bearing folks, college students (alone and in small groups) cramming for a calculus midterm, first dates conversing over a frothy cappuccino mug, a well-aged man with the Sunday paper in one hand and a black coffee of the day in the other, a mother enjoying a healthy garden salad while her 6-year old son picks the pepperoni from his pizza and eats it gingerly, and the 15-year old missing band member from The Clash will all be at the Living Room, at some point in the day, so grab a seat, cup of coffee and wait for your coffee experience.
The Living Room Old Town location is located at: 2541 San Diego Avenue, CA 92115 and is open 7am – 10pm Sunday thru Thursday and until Midnight on Friday and Saturday.
