One of the premier local floral attractions is the Cleveland Botanical Gardens (roses and annuals now in bloom) but if you are a Cleveland flower lover and just can’t get enough of beautiful flowers or you are looking for an excuse for a mini getaway then check out the Schedel Arboretum and Gardens in Elmore, Ohio —- only a 90 minute drive from Cleveland.
Schedel Arboretum and Gardens Founded by Joseph and Marie Schedel, Schedel Arboretum and Gardens was first opened to the public in 1991 and features 17 acres of gardens with more than 15,000 annuals, flowering trees, perennials, shrubs and many plant species not normally found in our region.
The arboretum includes 25 varieties of Japanese maples, 16 species of pine, cucumber and umbrella magnolia, as well as beech, bamboo,and cypress trees in addition to over 50 varieties of lilacs. Currently in bloom in the gardens are roses. day lilies, coneflowers, water lilies, annuals and tropicals like hibiscus.
One of the high point attractions at Schedel Arboretum and Gardens is the Japanese Garden located on the Portage River floodplain which features bridges, stone lanterns, a pagoda, a stupa with a Buddhist shrine and two waterfalls that empty into streams and pools that then flow into two lakes filled with a wide variety of fish.
Also on the property is a Kitchen Garden showcasing 180 varieties of ornamental hot peppers.
Also on the grounds is the Schedel mansion which is available for tour by appointment only. The Schedels were world travelers and visited more than 100 countries during their lifetime. The mansion contains items that the Schedels collected over the years like Persian carpets, handmade teak furniture, Japanese silk embroidery, prayer rugs, a 1000 year old bronze sculpture and a world-class jade collection.
Hours for the Schedel Arboretum and Gardens are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday and noon – 4 p.m. on Sunday. The gardens are closed on Mondays. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for children. Children 5 and under are free. Admission is $7 with a AAA discount. Parking is free. 419-862-3182.
