Elimination communication is used to potty train babies from the very beginning of their life. The goal is to learn to read your baby’s mood and eventually be able to tell when your baby “needs to go” so that you can put them on the potty. With this method you should be able to leave your baby diaper free without any accidents. Unbelievable, right? There are hundreds of testimonies of EC working and many books on the subject. A favorite being “The Diaper Free Baby” by Christine Gross-Loh.
If you don’t think EC is for you, but you are interested in potty training early then there are many options you can choose in between full out diaper wearing and going completely diaper free. Try a minimized EC method. That is, you still use diapers for your baby, but start sitting them on the potty on a regular basis. Decide on a schedule that works best for you and is based on your babies potty needs. If your baby soils his diaper within minutes of finishing a meal, then try adding potty time as the end to each meal. Besides meal times, babies often go after a nap or first thing in the morning, as well as after getting out of the car or another place they may have been sitting for a long period of time.
A good starting time is once daily while you fill the tub. The sound and site of the water should make them want to urinate. You can start as soon as your baby gets some control of their head. As your baby gets used to the potty and feels more comfortable on the potty, you can start adding specified potty times. Once your baby is crawling you can even keep a potty nearby so they can crawl to it when they feel the urge to relieve themselves. Make sure to give your baby many chances to use the potty throughout the day. The earlier in age you start introcucing potty time to your baby, the more comfortable they will be with sitting, and then using the potty for what it is meant for.
If you don’t want your child crawling to the potty you can teach them the potty sign used for mom’s practicing baby sign language with their little ones. Once your baby starts using the potty on a regular basis you can switch to underwear at home and save diapers for outings.
To ensure fast trips to the potty and keep the amount of accidents down you can invest in may EC specific baby accessories at the EC online store , including leg warmers for the diaper free babies and teeny tiny underwear for the teeny tiny potty users. There are also a variety of small potties made just for those early beginners. The Baby Bjorn potties are highly recommended by ECers.
Elimination communication doesn’t work for everyone. You can practice as little or as much as you like until you find what works best for you. In good time your baby will be diaper free.
