Christmas in Atlanta in days gone by are just that in some stores – days gone by. Entering Rich’s and Davison’s, now gone from the history books, you could just get lost in these huge stores. You would be able to buy certain cosmetic items and/or a fragrance and receive absolutely free very nice gifts which you could keep yourself or give away as gifts. I’m talking nice gifts. But you had to hurry; supplies went quickly.
I used to hit the Estee Lauder counter as soon as I entered Rich’s; a foreign name to the younger generation, that took up many blocks of downtown Atlanta. Each year they gave a large size cosmetic kit that was just great. It would come in some kind of case and have an assortment of lipsticks, eye shadows, lip liner, and mascara. You would get it free with the purchase of one of their fragrances. After all these many years, I still have one of the cases.
Some of my other favorites were: White Shoulders, Channel No. 5, and Jean Nate’. But to tell you the truth, my all time favorite was my very first Christmas present from my husband. Much cheaper than some; but was very popular in 1959. I still have and treasure the whole gift set. The box is lined with white satin and has an assortment of sizes of both perfume and cologne. After 52 years, they have not lost their fragrance. I didn’t use a lot from this box because I wanted to save it. I used it from other single bottles. I’m glad I did. it is a reminder of that very first Christmas together.
Rich’s Downtown Atlanta, as it was called after they opened suburban stores, you could enter on one street and walk through the store – and be on the other side of Atlanta.
Then I used to rush to the men’s fragrance department – they gave great gifts like umbrellas, wallets, and other good quality merchandise with the purchase of one of their men’s products. Some of the ones my husband liked were: British Sterling, English Leather, Jade East, and Arimis; but I loved him wearing nothing but Old Spice.
While some of these free gifts from Penney’s are not as elegant and large, you can still get some good deals on cosmetics (and fragrances) and get at least five free samples of products. Choosing the right gifts could put you up by ten gifts for this coming Christmas.
