If you are looking for sporting fun, Indianapolis is host to some of the best triathlon races in the Midwest! One such series of races is the Eagle Creek triathlon, organized by Tuxedo Brothers, at its namesake, Eagle Creek Park on the west side of the city. The parks’ expansive grounds feature trail and paved terrain that is flat and hilly, as well as a large lake which makes this an ideal location for any triathlon.
This weekend hosted the second in the three-part Eagle Creek, USATsanctioned sprint triathlon series. These events are so popular that they sell out weeks before. With a single convenient large paved transition area, the race holds 600 participants.
The swim is in the format of a three sided square starting out at the lake bank in 2 second intervals, swimming straight out towards the first buoy, then turning right to the second buoy and finally at the third buoy, swimming back to shore and out to the transition area. The water quality at Eagle Creek is very good, lacking the seaweed and heavy mud most lakes and reservoirs are plagued by. However, high levels of blue-green algae tend to appear toward the end of the season in August/September.
The bike leg is fairly hilly; in fact you start out going up a long hill! From there the course is filled with several sharp turns so you have to keep alert and change gears. Once out of Eagle Creek Park you head out on Lafyette Road which is a straight shot but still involves a few long hills. The course is basically out and back on the same road.
The run start can be challenging as once again it begins up the very same long hill you biked up earlier. You have to be careful not to exhaust yourself and run out of steam by the time you reach the top. The course after that is flat and heads out into the park on paved road for 1.5 miles before turning back around to return to the transition area. This does mean you have the added advantage of finishing downhill, allowing you to sprint towards the finish line – an exhilarating experience!
Despite Indianapolis recently being in a heat wave, the event did sell out with over 581 single participants and a whopping 24 teams. Top male overall finisher was DAVID FORSEE with 52min 31sec and top female overall finisher was MINDY NICOLET with 59min 52secs. TriNASTI finishers (Triathletes of Noblesville Adults Swim Team, Inc.) were as follows: Traci Ostendorf 2nd place age group, 105 place overall with 1hr 8min; Davina Lewis 3rd place age group, 144 place overall with 1hr 10min; Staci Ostendorf 5th place in age group, 241 overall with 1hr 15min; Jennifer Tiplick 7th in age group, 307 overall with 1hr 18min; Jim Goddard finished 7th in age group with overall time of 1hr; Jim Stone, 336 overall place with 1hr 19min; John Miller and Brian Katzfey excelled to the finish line in style.
Congratulations to everyonewho took part. Looking forward to another great race at Tri Indy downtown Indianapolis.
In the meantime keep running!
