Knitting for Dummies, 2nd edition and Knitting Patterns for Dummies is available in a book bundle. The Dummies series are instructional/reference books covering all different topics. These two Dummie books cover knitting, learning to knit as well as learning to read, understand and work a pattern.
The books are chock full of information. They are basic, straightforward and very well organized. There are icons of a bullseye (tips), a finger with string (remember) and a bomb (warning) that are there to guide you along the way. All Dummy books are set up the same way. So if you have referenced one before, you will be familiar with their style.
Each Knitting for Dummies is written by Pam Allen, Tracy L. Barr and Shannon Okey. What you will find is that there are only 8 pages of colored pictures in the center of the book. The material contained in the book makes up for the lack of photographs. You will learn everything from the basics, reading a stitch pattern and getting the gauge correct. The basic stitches are covered, fixing common mistakes, knitting in the round and simple projects to knit. Techniques for stripes, cables, lace, Fair Isle, Intarsia, blocking, finishing touches and a chapter on web sites, software, magazines and knitting supply sources. There is even a chapter about getting the knots out. Here you will learn exercises on how to unkink yourself.
Knitting Patterns for Dummies is by Kristi Porter. The book starts off with how to read a yarn label, familiarize yourself with patterns and color use. The pattern section starts of with rectangles, triangles and how to incorporate them into patterns. There is a chapter on how to care for your knits a chapter on “Ten things you can knit with that aren’t yarn or needles” and even “Ten ways to MacGyver your knitting”.
These are books that when you have a question, yu will find the answers and more. You will still need a reference book on different stiches, there is a small section and the pictures are black and white photos. So you will do better to have a designated stitch book.
