I spoke to Nonito Donaire Jr. recently to catch up with the WBC/WBO bantamweight champion, and talk about his possible next opponent.
Interview transcript (CLICK THIS LINK FOR VIDEO OF INTERVIEW) :
Nonito Donaire Jr. – “Well there’s a lot of names out there, and I’m willing to fight anyone. For me, ‘alam mo naman’, you know me, you know I don’t care who I fight. If it’s 118, let’s make it happen. You know I want to move up as fast as I can. If 118 can’t happen, then I’ll look forward to 122. And hopefully by next year, I’ll be able to fight at 126. Because you know right now, I’m getting a lot bigger. I’m going beyond what my normal weight limit is. And I’m excited for that. I’m looking forward to that.”
dSource – “Wow! That’s awesome. 126 next year? There’s a lot of good match-ups out there. But right now, who is Top Rank floating? Who are the possibilities for December in New York?”
Nonito Donaire Jr. – “We’re looking at the possibility of fighting Rafael Marquez or Toshiaki Nishioka; whoever wins between those guys. And that’s what I’d vouch for, because those two guys are amazing fighters. They’re good fighters, and I want to test my abilities against those guys.”
Writer’s Note: The younger Marquez (big brother is Juan Manuel) is challenging Nishioka for his WBC 122 title in October at the MGM.
“But like I said, there’s a lot of names out there that I can fight. There’s Jorge Arce, a lot of guys. There’s a lot of guys that can make it happen for me. So for me, it doesn’t matter who it is. Give me a world championship fight. Give me a World Champion, who believes that they can beat me. Let’s go for it!”
dSource – “Definitely. And you’ve taken on everyone they’ve put in front of you. So if it were up to you, Rafael Marquez is who you want?”
Nonito Donaire Jr. – “Whoever wins between Rafael Marquez, he’s a tough guy, He’s been in the sport for a while. Nashioka is a left-hand fighter from Japan. He knocked out Johnny Gonzalez. It’s a big match-up between those two and it doesn’t matter who it is. The best man wins, and it’s the best man that I want to fight.”
dSource – “And wouldn’t that be something? You and Pacquiao fighting the Marquez brothers!”
