Disgaea 4 is the fast approaching game from Nippon Ichi Software. I gave a preview of the game a while back, new details have emerged and these will make you want the game even more. Many features have been explained and some have been shown, but there aren’t any details about them other than a name.
All new classes have been revealed, Androids, Bouncers, Battle Suits, Professors and Onmyo Monks. No further details about these classes have been given. Only artwork and a description are given. It is also confirmed that Laharl, Flonne and Etna will be in the game. NIS has decided to expand on previous ideas and features such as the Item World and Class World (now called Chara World). The Item World was rather linear to traverse; the new addition of “Split Routes” will add something new and break the monotony of just picking one gate. The path you take depends on what portal you pass through on the battlefield. The Class World has some new additions as well. The Class World is how characters were able to learn abilities that weren’t specific to their class, like a Warrior learning Heal. Destroying all of the geo blocks on a Class World battlefield will net a discount from the mana expenditure when learning a new ability. Destroying the geo blocks will destroy the ground revealing Skill Spheres and Aptitude Spheres. Skill Spheres grant additional abilities while Aptitude Spheres grant better stat bonuses upon equipping weapons.
Battle wise “towering” or “staking” has been upgraded. The characters can now move while in tower form moving like a slinky down a flight of stairs. Staked characters can also lift characters and items for better movement or strategy. New items in battles have been revealed, bombs (which are self-explanatory), giant mushrooms and tombstones. Giant Mushrooms seem quite neat. When thrown onto an ally monster it will grow to be massive, whether or not this affects attack power and defensive capabilities is still unknown. Tombstones, when thrown, summon zombies.
Disgaea 3 essentially perfected the way other characters can benefit from one another. The classroom/club system was sophisticated and in-depth. This time around there is a feature known as the Power Map. When the player conquers more land, more characters can be used and placed on the map. To fully utilize the map objects known as “Evil Symbols” all have different effects that are granted to the surrounding characters. A character in the “Evil Area” gains a bonus from that Evil Symbol. It doesn’t stop there, when a leader is appointed he/she/it gains all bonuses as well as stats and skill form the characters in the Evil Area. These can be stacked and linked up to create “Super Soldiers” having a one character the leader of many symbols is purely beneficial.
If you have seen screenshots of Disgaea 4 you may notice a change in look. The series now has High Resolution sprites and the characters look more detailed than they ever have before. If you are one of those people who are afraid of change, no worry, you can also switch between the original sprite artwork and the Hi-Res. A new feature in the “Base of Operations” has been added called “Data Shop”, The Data Shop records and stores all information regarding your progress in the game. You can also view other people’s progress and statistics as well. Map creation has been introduced to the Disgaea series. More details have been added and it is confirmed once you make a map It can be uploaded for other people to use.
The series is getting hit with puberty and going more mature. A more sophisticated view looms over the new game and it is very promising. The more political atmosphere adds to the twisted nature of the Netherworld. As with previous Disgaea games, there is a voting system where you want to gain a new character class, increase/decrease the power of enemies or unlock more items. Now it is set as a Senate, and the monsters/characters are politicians. Creating a Cabinet with competent characters will quickly become necessary. The characters will take on different roles, one of which is the Defense Minister who will go to other player’s Senate sessions and play the support role. There are also Foreign Ministers who go to other senate sessions and depending on the characteristic the minister will help or prevent a bill for passing. It helps to have stronger characters propose bills and have as ministers, the more powerful the character the more veto power he/she/it has.
DLC has also been added featuring Mao, Priere and Saber Pink. This brings the count to six DLC characters, Adell, Asagi, Rozalin, Mao, Priere and Saber Pink. A special DLC for those who preorder the premium edition game will also be given, it will be Fallen Angel Flonne.
These new features will surely add to the replay value and experience players will get from Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten. A release date has been confirmed; pick up your copy on September 6, 2011. Happy Gaming.
