A remake of the 1981 classicThe Evil Dead was confirmed by star Bruce Campbell many months ago, and details have been trickling in ever since. According to a report by Deadline on Thursday, Juno writer Diablo Cody has jumped on board the production. Cody, who also penned the horror comedy Jennifer’s Body, is revising the latest draft of the script written by director Fede Alvarez.
This is not the first time a comedic filmmaker has ventured into horror. Kevin Smith of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back fame directed Red State, which comes out in October. And back in May, comedic actor Jay Baruchel, best known for movies like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and How to Train Your Dragon, decided he wanted to try his hand at writing horror scripts, signing on for The Exorcism Diaries and Random Acts of Violence.
Many horror fans will bring out pitchforks at the mere mention of a horror remake, but this one might actually be interesting. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, producer and star, respectively, of the original, are involved in the project, and it’s relatively difficult to screw up your own original vision. Cody’s involvement in the project is unexpected at best, but Juno did pretty well and Jennifer’s Body is…well, awesome. Perhaps her writing style will bring a new generation of teenagers to the franchise. Hattiesburg residents can rent a copy of the original The Evil Dead on Netflix or Blockbuster in Ocean Springs.
