According to the New York Post, President Obama will replace Joe Biden with newly elected New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo as his running mate in 2012.
The sources of the information cited by columnist Frederic Dicker are an unnamed “prominent Democrat” and former New York GOP boss William Powers. The latter, who was instrumental in the election of Rudolph Giuliani as New York City mayor and George Pataki as state governor, expressed admiration for Cuomo’s accomplishments in the just-ended legislative session. In it, the governor orchestrated a property-tax cap, ethics reform and — perhaps most impressive — the legalization of gay marriage.
Of the claim that the president will change vice presidential horses in mid-stream, Powers is quoted as saying:
I don’t think there’s any doubt Obama is going to pick [Cuomo] as his running mate. The president is in trouble and Biden doesn’t bring anything to his ticket.
The president will call him up later this year and say, ‘Andrew, you have to do this for the good of the country.’ What’s Andrew going to say, ‘No?’
Cuomo, who signed the same-sex marriage bill into law minutes after its late-night passage in the New York State Assembly, is widely considered the front-runner in the 2016 presidential race regardless of what happens in the interim.
Naming Cuomo as his running mate would earn the president a vote of confidence from the gay and lesbian lobby, who are wary of his wavering stance on gay rights. It would also make his life easier in the event he won a second term since Biden not surprisingly has been a loose cannon. His off-the-cuff remarks, which famously include a profanity whispered in the president’s ear after the passage of Obama’s health care bill, have been a liability for an administration already foundering in choppy political waters.
The prediction that Obama will replace Biden with Cuomo was made earlier this year by former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown:
He’s a big name, a big-state governor, and a Democrat who is taking on the issue of public-employee salaries and pensions. Plus, he looks good.
Brown additionally predicted that Biden would be named as a replacement for Hillary Rodham Clinton as Secretary of State. Name the hapless Joe Biden the voice of American diplomacy around the world? Now that, to quote Biden, would be a “big f—ing deal.”
