Facebook friends of a Scarborough woman who was believed beaten to death by her fundamentalist Muslim husband confirmed Thursday that the victim’s main crime was sharing her feelings on the social networking site.
Canadian citizen Shaher Bano Shahdady, 21, was allegedly “honor killed” at her Scarborough apartment by her Pakistani husband Abdul Malik Rustam last weekend as her two-year-old son played around.
Sheikh Taqqi from Quetta, Balochistan, said to me, “She (Shahdady) was a friend of mine on Facebook, and her murder, by her own unlettered husband shook my soul.”
Taqqi said he learned from mutual friends on Facebook that the victim’s parents, “who were indirectly involved in this cold blooded murder, have forgiven her husband, Abdul Malik Rustam.”
He said the victim was forcibly married off against her wish. Multiple sources have confirmed that Shahdady was taken to Pakistan and was married against her wishes by her born-again Muslim father Mullah Abdul Ghafoor.
“She just wanted freedom to be on Facebook, which eventually became the cause of her death,” Taqqi said.
Annum Fatima described Rustam as Shahdady’s worst nightmare. She said the victim was her role model as she was completing her school to become a doctor and was also a loving mother to her sick son.
Shahdady told her the husband did not believe in divorce. “If he was that possessive of her, he should have kept her happy not kill her.”
Rustam arrived in Canada in May, according to Sergeant Graham Gibson.
Mustikhan’s note: Some family members of the victim who run the Baloch Human Rights Council Canada tried to counsel this writer not to expose the dastardly crime, but were told there would be absolutely on compromise on honor killings.
