Sony Online Entertainment is combining the 26 servers of DC Universe Online into two Playstation 3 MegaServers and 2 PC MegaServers to get more people playing the superhero MMORPG together. The developers announced the plans a few months back and have now dropped the details on when and how it will happen.
The first megaserver will go live for the PC version of DC Universe Online in Europe at 8 a.m. PST / 5 p.m. CET on Monday, August 8. The US PC version will go live at the same time on Wednesday, August 10 followed by the US PS3 version on Thursday, August 11 and the European PS3 version on Monday, August 15. SOE says that the schedule could change based on how the transition for each step goes.
According to SOE, the primary improvements that players will see as a result to the move to the megaservers are:
- You will see much larger populations!
- You will have a much larger pool of people to join in Alerts, Duos, Raids, Legends PvP, etc.
- It will be much easier to play with friends who were previously on other servers (plus lots of new friends to make).
- You will be able to switch between PvP and PvE style play by using the phase shifters in the Hall of Doom and JLA Watchtower.
- There will be a larger number of items in the Broker.
Players should be aware that their DCUO character name may be changed due to there being duplicate names across servers. In a roundtable interview back in May, SOE indicated that players who had been active the longest and spent the most time in the game would get name priority. Players will receive an in-game email with a name change token and instructions on how to change their name if they don’t wish to keep the new one assigned to them. This also applies to duplicate League names though it will be the League leaders receiving the in-game emails.
Once the MegaServers are up and running, players will be placed in different “Phases” of the DCUO game world. SOE explains this as follows:
The new servers will be arranged in “Phases”. A phase can be thought of as a combination of all of the shared world areas of the game: Metropolis, Gotham, Police Stations and Night Clubs, the Hall of Doom, and the JLA Watchtower, etc. The MegaServer will always have at least one PvP phase and one PvE phase. You can transition from the PvE phase to PvP and vice versa by using the phase shifters in the Watchtower and the Hall of Doom. Because the server populations will increase dramatically after this change there may be times when there are multiple PvP and/or PvE phases on the server. If you find yourself in a different phase than a Friend, League mate or Group mate, you can always change to the same phase by using the “Phase With” command from the social quick menu. Please remember that you can only Phase with someone who is playing the same mode as yourself (PvE or PvP).
The great thing is that regardless of phase or whether you are playing in PvP or PvE, all other players on the MegaServer will be available to join you in all of the queued Alerts, Raids, Duos, and Arenas.
SOE also provided a handy list to show which current DCUO server will be transition to which MegaServer.
