Former senator and would-be GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum will have many obstacles in his way on the road to the White House. Chief among them is what mainstream media outlets have taken to calling his “Google problem”: As far as Internet search engines are concerned, “santorum” has come to be defined as “The frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the by-product of anal sex.”
Santorum’s Google problem dates back to 2003, when he got on the wrong side of sex advice columnist Dan Savage with anti-gay comments like this one, to the Associated Press:
“If the Supreme Court says that you have a right to consensual sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything.”
In response, Savage challenged his readers to help him redefine “santorum” into an improbably improper noun, writing,
“There’s no better way to memorialize the Santorum scandal than by attaching his name to a sex act that would make his big, white teeth fall out of his big, empty head.”
Santorum’s anti-gay remarks have only escalated since he announced his plans to run for the presidency; now Savage — who has since become famous for his It’s Gets Better campaign to send messages of hope and inspiration to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth in the face of bullying and discrimination — is back at it with some more bullying of his own, threatening to escalate his campaign to drag Santorum’s name through the Santorum:
In a new clip this weekend for the website FunnyOrDie.com, Savage has issued a new threat to similarly redefine Santorum’s first name (see video at left). And while the video is tongue-in-cheek and was created for a comedy website, one gets the sense that Savage is only half-kidding.
