Don’t be intimidated by the name. Crêpes on the Square in Historic Liberty, Missouri, offers delicious French-style crêpes right here in the Heart of America, and you don’t have to speak French to order them.
Opening at the very end of 2009, with only days left after Christmas, under blizzard-like conditions, Crêpes on the Square was still able to lure in people with the idea of delicious food and fresh-brewed coffees. Owner, Neil Battrum, was well on his way to start a crêpes craze in Kansas City. Crêpes on the Square, in the building which formerly housed the bookstore, By The Book, is located in Liberty Square 4 North Main Street, Liberty, Missouri.
The large chalk menu board may be a little confusing for the uninitiated. Pick up a paper copy of the menu at the cash register and find yourself a good spot to sit down or wander to the back of the shop and take a look at the variety of featured Roasterie house coffees of the day. The upstairs balcony has additional seating as well as a lounge area and a meeting table for larger groups that may want to try out a crêpe with a cup of brew.
You may ask, “What IS a crêpe?” Meaning “curled” in French and thus auspicious enough to include a circumflex above the “e,” a crêpe (pronounced “krep”) is a type of very thin pancake (usually made from wheat flour). Crêpes are served with a variety of fillings and the Crêpes on the Square menu offers something for any taste, any time of day.
Breakfast Crêpes, served all day, include egg, cheddar and choice of breakfast meat (bacon, sausage or ham) or mushrooms and spinach, as well as a special crêpe called The Health Nut with vanilla yogurt, granola, chopped nuts and sliced bananas in a sweet crêpe batter.
If you’re up for something other than breakfast, Crêpes on the Square has an assortment of classic crêpes like the turkey pesto or monte cristo and paninis like ham and pepperjack or chicken salad, soups, salads, and fresh-baked goods. There’s even a Kids’ menu featuring a peanut butter & jelly crêpe.
Along with the daily Roasterie house coffees, from their drink menu you can choose a latte, cappuccino, espresso, or other standard coffeehouse drinks or you can choose one of their signature frappes, frozen favorites like Marge’s Favorite – caramel, whipped cream with caramel sauce and toffee chips, or the Bean Blaster – Ground chocolate espresso beans with whipped cream and chocolate syrup, or even the Cherry Cordial – cherry syrup, whipped cream, chocolate syrup and a cherry on top!
