If you happened to walk by Taylor Shellfish on Cap hill last night you might have noticed an after- hours happening. What you might have seen is a not so slight of frame tall statured man holding a club—a crab club that is.
For many months seafood whisperer Jon Rowley has been singing the praises of the latest shellfish gadget-the crab club (recently renamed the crab mallet.) I’m not taken to buying kitchen gadgets preferring to spend my hard earned greenbacks on raw ingredients and wine but the crab club is a keeper. (I had an opportunity to give it a test run back when Taylor unveiled the tool at a complimentary grand opening crab cracking class by Jon Rowley. Chefs Tamara Murphy, Becky Selengut, myself and a handful of other friends and acquaintances watched as Jon removed piece after piece of fully intact crab meat—no squishing and breaking like with a traditional cracker. Needless to say I spent the 20 bucks and now use exclusively the club at home and afield (think Canon Beach and lovely parks.)
The good news is now you too can get schooled on how to crack a crab. Every Monday at 8 pm Taylor Shellfish will hold a crab cracking class; you’ll get some hands on learnin and a half of a cracked crab all for only $10 a head. Sessions are bound to fill fast as only 6 students per evening get to work with the master cracker Jon Rowley. To reserve you space call 206-501-4321.
