So last week was the biggest comic book and pop culture event- Comic Con International which is held in beautiful San Diego. Here some of the biggest comic book and movie news is released. This year was no different. There were big announcements from the Big 2- Marvel and DC, but also there were some great announcements from Image and other smaller publishers. Some of the biggest comic book news has to be Brian K. Vaughn’s return back to the world of comic books. Brian K. Vaughn is known for the great graphic novel Y The Last Man, but he has been in the land of Hollywood lately working on TV shows and movies. Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples have collaborated on an original series titled SAGA. It is being described as an EPIC Sci-Fi story. With the greatness of Vaughn’s writing we can only imagine what it will be. To even out his writing is the very talented Fiona Staples. She has a very original style to her illustrations, plus she colors all of her own work, which just adds to the wonderful panels she creates.
Another original series is getting some buzz from Comic Con is Maryland’s own Frank Cho and Joe Keatinge’s BRUTAL. The book stars Stone, a mysterious assassin who not only gets paid big bucks to kill super-folks but seems to be getting more and more powerful as she does. It is an ultra-violent and over the top comic book. We can expect action, action and more action.
Along with comic books Comic Con is known for movie/TV news and promos. Well Marvel dazzled the crowd with concept artwork from The Avengers film, which will be released next summer 2012. The artwork features all the main players from The Avengers and just adds to the excitement from the teaser trailer that was featured at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger. One panel got a suprise when a ‘fan’ walked up to the mic at The Amazing Spider-Man panel to ask a question. But this fan wasn’t just some cosplayer waiting to ask a question, it was the star of The Amazing Spider-Man Andrew Garfield. He got a big reaction when he took off his Spidey mask to reveal himself to the crowd. You can check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_nHhlBFs2k
Next up was The Walking Dead, the smash hit on AMC last fall. It broke many AMC cable records for people viewing The Walking Dead TV series. Well AMC and Robert Kirkman pulled out all the stops for the 2nd Season to The Walking Dead. They released a 4 minute long trailer for this new season and it delivers all the zombie madness from the first Season. You can check out the trailer on the left hand side of this article.
Last but not least are one of the over looked things from Comic Con International is the Eisner Awards, which along with the Harvey Awards (Which are handed out here in Baltimore at the Baltimore Comic Con) are the 2 big awards for professionals in the comic book world. Some notable winners- CHEW for best ongoing series, Joe Hill for best writer for his work on Lock and Key from IDW and best new series American Vampire from Scott Snyder, Stephen King, and Rafael Albuquerque (Vertigo/DC).
Yes there was much, much more from Comic-Con International, but these are some of the highlights. Now it is time for you, me and everyone else to get ready for Baltimore’s own Comic Con this coming August 20-21.
