The 2nd Annual Colorado Rapids Charity Classic is approaching and spots are still available for this event.
The 2010 MLS Champions are inviting you to join them on Monday, August 1, 2011, and “enjoy a day of golf with Rapids players and coaches. Proceeds benefit Kroenke Sports Charities, which provides programs for underserved children and families.”
The event takes place at The Club at Pradera in Parker, Colorado, Monday, August 1, 2011. There will be a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start.
The cost is $1,000 per foursome or $300 per person. Participants may create their own foursome or choose to have a Rapids player or coach join a three player group.
The winner of last year’s Classic was a group from the Korean Retail Association, Heineken USA. They are hoping for another win, but are also eager to help raise money for Kroenke Sports Charities.
“We had a great time last year,” Kevin Walters of Heineken USA said, “It was a great opportunity to support the community and the organization.”
“We have been involved with Dick’s Sporting Goods Park since it opened,” the local market manager continued. “We are the import beer sponsor of the park, and donate prizes as well as sampling products at the event.”
Last year, the Charity Classic earned over $20,000 for Kroenke Sports Charities. Colorado Rapids players are anticipating another memorable afternoon.
“I really enjoyed it,” Quincy Amarikwa said of last year’s event. “I think the Rapids organization does a really good job of putting on good charity events that are fun for both the fans and the players. It’s fun, and it’s for a good cause. So everyone really has a good time when we are out there.”
The event gives players and fans the chance to get to know each other while playing golf.
“I like to mingle. I like the golfing, so it’s good,” explains Amarikwa. “You are hanging out with three other people the whole time, so it’s a good time to meet other people and talk to fans, talk to people who work for the organization, people you might not normally get the chance to speak to. Those are good events to go to.”
“It’s just a fun event,” defender Drew Moor agrees. “A lot of guys like to get away from soccer and play golf. We have got some good golfers on our team. We’ve got some bad golfers on our team, including myself. It’s just a fun event. You get to meet people and sponsors that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to meet, and share some time with.”
Both Amarikwa and Moor have golfed since they were young, but stop short of calling themselves passionate golfers.
“I say I’ve been golfing since I was 11 or 12,” Moor admits. “I’ve been a good golfer, never. I probably play a couple times a year. It’s just a fun, relaxing sport. You don’t have to be good at it to enjoy it. I am a prime example of that. It’s just fun to get together with guys, and play a round of 18.”
Moor also shares who he sees as the competitive golfers of the group.
“Pablo (Mastroeni) is a pretty avid golfer, and I think he is a pretty good golfer,” says Moor. “There are a couple others; Chris Sharpe is a good golfer. Wells Thompson is a good golfer. If anyone is going to do anything under the table,” Moor teases, “it’ll be those guys.”
