The Clickfree Transformer provides another easy option for backing up your PC or Mac, transferring data between systems or setting up a new computer. Connect the Transformer to a USB port on your computer and connect any external USB hard drive to the other end of the Transformer. The Clickfree Transformer (available from Staples online with free shipping to the Bel Air store or a Staples store near you) will do all the work.
If you don’t have a USB hard drive but you have a standard hard drive just gathering dust, you can turn it into a USB drive by installing it in a USB drive enclosure. I hate throwing out any hardware that is still usable so I had a 200 GB drive handy. The Clickfree Transformer gives new life to one or more hard drives that can be re-purposed as backup drives.
The Clickfree Transformers come in a variety of different models including:
- Basic – for use with USB hard drives.
- iPod – backs up data from your computer to your iPod or iPhone.
- Deluxe – for use with USB hard drives and iPod or iPhones.
- Network – backs up your data to a USB drive over your home network.
- DVD -searches your computer for files to backup to discs in your DVD writer.
Clickfree Basic Transformer Features:
- PC and MAC Compatible
- Backs up Over 400 File Types
- Supports 14 Languages
- Works with ANY External USB Drive
- Backup Multiple Computers
- Works with Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.5 or later with Intel processor
What’s in the Box
The Basic Clickfree Transformer looks a bit like a USB flash drive with a cable on one end and a USB port on the other end. The backup instructions are contained on the device with no software installation required. The package includes a short USB 2.0 cable with a standard type A Male connector at one end and a Mini-B connector at the other. The device will also work with any standard USB 2.0 cable. It doesn’t come with a user’s manual but one is available for download from Clickfree’s support page.
Backing up with the Clickfree Basic Transformer was very similar to using the Clickfree C2 Portable Backup Drive which I recently reviewed. The main difference is that you provide the hard drive for the Transformer to use for storing your backed up data. The Transformer is USB 2.0 compatible.
The backup process is the same for both devices. You simply plug the device into a USB port on your computer. It is recommended that you connect the device directly to your computer and not via a hub. When the Clickfree Welcome screen pops up, you can accept the default backup settings and just let the backup start in about 30 seconds or you can adjust the settings to fine-tune the backup to fit your particular needs.
Your first backup will include all the selected files. Subsequent backups will be incremental and will add any new or changes files to update the original backup. Once your first backup is completed, future backups will take much less time making it more likely you that you will backup on a regular basis.
You may select to install the Reminder option to tell you to back up at the interval you select. This also places the Clickfree icon on your taskbar where it is easy to launch the program and adjust settings. You can also set up a schedule for unattended backups to your Clickfree device. The Reminder application can be removed later if you wish.
The menu options make it very easy to manage your backup settings, view the data for each computer that is backed up to that hard drive, rename a PC, remove a PC or make changes to the backup settings.
A colorful pie-chart clearly shows the total capacity of the drive and how much space is taken up by the backup files for each computer. It also displays the date of the last backup for the selected computer.
The Tools Menu allows you to update the Clickfree software, set the Language you wish to use for your backups and do a Master Reset which will remove all the data from your hard drive if you need to do so.
Support options are provided for Web, Email and Toll Free phone support. You can also view system information for your computer.
Transfer & Restore
This is probably the most important part of all. A backup isn’t much good if you can’t figure out how to restore the files when needed. The Clickfree Transformer allows you to easily Restore All files to their original location or select individual files or folders to restore or transfer to the location you select. Restore & Transfer is on the menu bar where it’s easy to find so you don’t have to dig around through layers of other menu options to get to it.
Easily Browse and Search Files by File Type, File Date or File Name and even View Photos.
Backups with the Clickfree Transformer are easy, effortless, and affordable with the added flexibility of using a hard drive you already have on hand. Backup multiple computers to the same hard drive to keep the data from all your computers stored in one place. Use the Transformer to backup to multiple drives so you can store a full backup set off-site or in a fireproof safe.
If you have multiple Clickfree backup devices, it is best to only have one attached to the computer at any given time. I had both the C2 Portable Backup Drive and the Basic Transformer device connected at the same time. It seemed to confuse the Transformer causing it to launch the Welcome screen every few minutes which was quite annoying. When I removed the C2 drive, the Transformer performed normally again.
