Anyone who uses a computer knows that backups are critical to preserving files in the event of a data disaster. Unfortunately, most backup software is slow, cumbersome, and difficult to use. That means that most of us don’t backup as often as we should and our data remains vulnerable. Clickfree has backup options that will change all that. The Clickfree C2 Portable Backup Drive comes in 500 GB, 750 GB and 1 TB sizes and is available at HH Gregg Appliances in their Bel Air and Towson stores.
- USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 Compatible
- Password Protection: 256-bit hardware encryption
- CD/DVD Archiving: backup copies to CD/DVD
- Music Manager: for iPhone, iPad, and iPod
- File Manager: All files organized by type for easy viewing.
- Computer Migration: Transfer files between computers and operating systems
I was allowed the opportunity to test the Clickfree C2 500 GB Backup Drive. The drive is encased in a slim, shiny black case which looks very similar to other portable USB drives. The difference is in the software instructions contained on the drive. That software is not installed but is activated when the Clickfree drive is plugged into the USB port on your computer.
Once your computer recognizes the drive, the backup program will start up and you will see the Clickfree Welcome screen. It will display the computer name, the amount of space currently in use on the backup drive and the date and time of your last backup. From this screen, you may view a previous backup, change your backup settings and restore or transfer a backup. If you do nothing, the backup will begin in about 30 seconds using the default settings to backup your:
- Text Documents
- Artwork and Drawings
- E-mail Files
- Favorite Websites
- Your Custom Settings
The default settings will backup the drives installed inside your computer. If you wish to also backup any external drives, you can change the backup options to include any additional drives, folders or files that you wish to add to your backup.
If you have music and playlists on your iPhone or iPod that you would like to import to your computer, simply connect the device and select the Import Music option on the Clickfree program screen. This function apparently does not work with other mp3 players.
The Tools Menu provides the means to setup a Clickfree password to protect your backup from unauthorized access. From this menu, you may also select to have the program automatically check for any new software updates. Updating the software doesn’t affect any of the files on your backup device. If you go to My Computer, you will see that there are 2 new drives labeled Clickfree System and CF_Storage. Your files are stored on that second drive.
From the Tools Menu, you may also select the Language that you wish to use for your backups. The default is English but you may select from a dozen languages including French, Spanish, Italian, German and others.
The Master Reset option will remove all data from your Clickfree Backup drive. Using the reset function will not affect any of the files on your PC.
If you wish to further optimize your backups, you may select the Scheduler Menu. If the backup scheduler is not yet installed, you can install it from this screen. You can also change the date and time for your automatic backup. The default setting for this is to backup every 2 hours. You may select the backup frequency option from:
- 1 -10 minutes
- 1-12 hours
- 1-6 days
- Once a week
- Once every 2 weeks
You may also select the exact starting time for your backup from the Scheduler Menu.
The Support Menu provides a listing of all the ways you can contact Clickfree Support for help. These include Web and Email Support as well as Toll Free telephone options for North America and around the World.
Clickfree has also provided an easy way to make an extra DVD backup copy of your most important files. This option launches a separate application. You may choose to accept the default settings for your DVD backup or make any changes you need. They have also included a Verify option which will take twice as long and will require that your applications be closed before proceeding. Verify will make sure that all the data can be read and that the files have been burned correctly to the disc.
Restore and Transfer options allow you to easily restore your files back to your computer or to another location of your choice. There is also an option to Undo a previous restore option if you need to go back for some reason. There are 2 levels of Restore. You may select Quick Restore
which will restore all your files to their original location. The Advanced Restore option will allow you to select the files, folders or even the categories of the files you wish to restore and transfer them to a new computer or any other destination where you wish to restore or transfer them. It couldn’t be easier.
The Clickfree backup of the 3 hard drives in my computer were definitely the fastest and easiest backups I’ve ever done. The first backup I did used the default settings and backed up two hard drives that are 500 GB each and one small drive of only 40 GB. That backup was accomplished in about an hour an a half when the drive was connected to a USB 2.0 port. The second backup which used the same settings took about 40 minutes when the drive was attached to a USB 3.0 port. This second backup scanned all the original files that were backed up the first time and added any new or changed files. I was impressed with the backup speed even with the slower USB 2.0 so the USB 3.0 speed was just icing on the cake.
