I am normally not a spontaneous food writer, I research and try to only pick out great places to visit. But, after my visit to Jake’s Cigars and Spirits last night I had to start writing about them and spread the good word.
I have heard of Jake’s numerous times over the years but I am never in the area and in the land of Omaha, traveling even after two drinks is like asking the friendly Omaha police department to kindly take you to jail.
My visit to Jake’s last night happened by chance, in tow with fellow foodies from a barbecue competition held next door at The Waiting Room we took a short 20-step journey into the bar. Jake’s wasn’t great just for the cigars, spirits, or mind-blowing selection of draft beers, it was for everything. When you can grab a drink, sit in a bar and immediately exhale a sigh of relief, you know you are in a great place.
As an avid people watcher, I did just that, watching and listening to the conversations and chatter around the bar. The music for me was upbeat, fun and even a bit nostalgic when I heard Q-Tip over the speakers singing, “such a vivrant thing.”
The atmosphere is comfortable and provides and enclosed space for cigarette smokers for convenience and if the elements outside are less than desirable. On my visit, the bartenders were Adam and Chad who were very helpful and hospitable to our group of 12 or so foodies and drinkers.
One of the best bars in Omaha for sure, and the bourbon, whiskey and cigar selection is better than those other cigar bars I have been to in Omaha. However, for me, a self-proclaimed beer-whore I need a nice glass of the beer suds to make my night.
The beer selection at Jake’s is commendable and inspiring for a non-corporate establishment. The friendly staff will help you find a delicious beer through a series of sampling and conversation and they deliver a well-poured beer I might add.
I decided on a tap beer and felt a little funky, so I picked the Kinda Blue Blueberry Wheat, from Boulder Brewing Company. A mild amber beer with a very light blueberry flavor, surprisingly very light which was great for me. Served in a brilliant wheat beer glass that provides the highest experience in beer enjoyment. The functional glass enhances the appearance, aroma and flavor of the beer, while the design of this glass, a tall goblet, requires a deliberate but gentle pour at the beginning then a straight pour of beer-rain to create a thick, creamy foam. If you are not thirsty by now then I have not done my job as a writer, so get up and make some plans to meet a couple of friends at Jake’s Cigars and Spirits this week.
