The Salvation Army/Red Shield Community Center, 2915 High St., kick off their 1st Annual HEELS FOR RED SHIELD 5K walk/run fundraiser this Saturday morning at 8:45 AM when the race/walk participants head to the starting position where Denver District 8 City Councilman Albus Brooks will cut the ribbon starting the race promptly at 9 AM.
District 8 Councilman Brooks is an ardent supporter of what Salvation Army Captains Ron and Roberta McKinney are attempting to re-stablish in the District 8 community providing services ranging from after school programs to boxing as a form of leadership and mentoring through the Cox-Lyle Boxing program.
Organizing this 1st Annual affair was no easy task, and the tireless efforts of Advisory Council member Ryan Sondrup (who took on the job of organizing the entire affair) should be recognized and he congratulated.
Along with all other Advisory Council members who volunteered their time in making this fundraiser a success, the opportunity for community involvement is what makes this venture most exciting.
The on-line registration capabilities will end at midnight tonight (Thursday), but don’t let that deter any of you wishing to show up on race/walk day as there will be registration tables available for those wishing to participate at the last minute on this Labor Day weekend.
Credit card payments are being applied at designated pay stations, and if you’re unable to join in the race festivities but would like to make a donation, any amount no matter how small will be greatly appreciated.
The race itself will be run through the historic 5-Points neighborhood beginning at the Red Shield Community Center (2915 High St.), and ending at the same address with Welton, California, Downing, and the many streets in between outlining the race course.
The Denver Police and Fire Department’s have graciously donated their efforts in securing the safety for runners/walkers of the 5K course from beginning to end and their efforts are much appreciated.
Sponsors such as Deep Rock Water (providing water for the participants) and King Soopers (providing healthy snacks), and Healthy Heart Sponsors contributing $100 each: Ched and Wendy Snow, Susan Carlin, Brinkman Mountain Real Estate, Beck, Ron and Roberta McKinney, Gail Harvey, Susan Tucker, Dick Tucker, Wells Fargo, Gary Vanderark, and Joan and Ron Maclachlan, will each have their names showcased on the racing bibs for showing support by their gracious monetary donations that are greatly appreciated.
The word of this event has reached as far as Italy (Sara Spoonhour) and even Africa, with elite world-class runners training for other Colorado events having contacted Red Shield and are welcomed participants in this community supported fundraiser.
Make sure to get your on-line registration completed or prepare to arrive early Saturday morning (7 AM) for a fun-filled day of music, food, prizes, and entertainment all supporting the 1st Annual HEELS FOR RED SHIELD fundraiser.
