Straying a bit from convention this year to continue its gold standard, the 2011 Summer Pops concert series introduced San Diego Symphony attendees to open air dining accompanied by a melodic circus by the sea.
The ear and eye-candied spectacle featured the debut performance by Cirque Musica, a troupe of eclectic circus artists, united with a powerful orchestral arrangement of musical genius.
The event gave rise to a total sensory experience for the sold out seated audience of 2,600 by the waterfront stage located in the South Embarcadero Marina Park.
A customized event menu highlighted flavors of the summer season including marinated artichokes with pesto bruschetta, a balsamic heirloom tomato salad with torn basil. Taking the center ring was the herb-crusted halibut served with a tomato fennel fondue.
Feats of partner acrobatics, soaring aerialists and slackwire acts poised high above the musical ensemble, to showcase gravity-defying acts of grace, endurance and flexibility that only a contortionist knows. The breathtaking feats of strength and counterbalance seized the full attention of the jaw-dropping guests of all ages.
Diners enjoyed the symphonic score including musical masterworks such as Rimsky-Korsakov’s furiously paced Flight of the Bumblebee. An appropriate tribute was then made to the 2011 Comic Con event, located at the heels of the venue, with a moving performance of the iconic Superman Theme song by John William.
A wild, lasso stage show then bullwhipped the act into shape with the calvary charge of the William Tell Overture composed by he who knew the opera ropes well, Gioachino Rossini.
Diners and picnic-goers alike soaked up the enchanting soundscape and unique entertainment by San Diego’s beautiful waterfront, while effervescent bottles of champagne popped before a pink and golden painted sunset.
The dazzling grand finale included the bubbly stuff with a perfect accompaniment of miniature red velvet cupcakes and cheesecake bites created to warmly welcome the tradition of illuminated fireworks lighting the night sky, signaling the conclusion of the dynamite performance.
If you’re fixing for an adventurous outing, pack up your friends, family, blankets and a picnic basket, or splurge with champagne seating to savor the remainder of summer and catch the sparkle of the Summer Pops concert series by a firework lit sky and musical soundscape that only the San Diego Symphony can offer.
