This must be what Christmas is like in Florida. But for the moment let’s turn to cooler ideas, 55 Christmas Balls to Knit by Arne & Carlos. Just looking at the cover of this book will draw you in.
Arne and Carlos love Christmas and decorating their Norwegian home. The Christmas balls they designed are in the Scandinavian tradition. These are perfect to knit for gifts as they are fast and require small amounts of yarn (stash). Think table centerpieces and window dressings, wreaths and decorations on your presents for these beautiful knitted ornaments.
The guys run a knitwear design company. In 2008, four of these little Nordic ball designs were bought by Comme des Garcons, Japan’s most respected design house. They were sold in their shops in Tokyo, Paris, New York, London and Hong Kong. Now you have the opportunity to knit them yourself.
Arne and Carlos live North of Oslo where the winter comes early and with that snow, cold and the sun barely rises. This allows for a lot of knitting time. The basic pattern is given for the balls and then diagrams are used for the motifs. The designs are simple and easy (quick) to follow. If you would rather embroider on the designs, there is information on that too.
White and red and white and black were chosen as the desired color choice, but feel free to make them your own. 100% wool batts are used for stuffing the ornaments. After much trial and error, they feel this makes them firmer and allows them to keep their shape.
You will love the photography. Arne and Carlos love collecting miniatures and have a homemade dollhouse. Looking at the photographs is a lot like the “Eye Spy” books, filled with wonderful surprises and ornaments.
Choose from reindeer, hearts, animals, birds and designs. They have included tidbits of information on how they came up with the motifs as well as Christmas at their house. You may want to knit them all yourself or if you know a knitter who really gets into Christmas, you may want to just wrap up the book.
The book is fun and a delight to browse through. You will enjoy Arne and Carlos and their designs. A quirky and enjoyable book that works as a coffee table book. Meet them both on the video to the left.
