The 2011 Gideon Media Arts Conference and Film Festival, set for August 6th – 11th at LifeWay Conference Center in Ridgecrest, NC, once again will give Christian media professionals an opportunity to learn and share talents, knowledge and expertise with each other. Whether new or well established in the area of Christian media, Gideon is for anyone interested in honing their skills in entertainment, whether it be film, television, music, theater, radio, or writing.
Several movies are scheduled to show at Gideon’s Film Festival, including the acclaimed film “The Grace Card” starring Michael Joiner. A Q&A with Joiner follows the August 9 film showing. “Pitching Hope” director Tony Mendoza is the sponsor of Gideon’s opening night. Other films screening are “Cutback,” “Courage New Hampshire,” “Jamaa,” “Decision,” “The Lamp,” “The Shunning,” “Beware of Christians,” “All For Liberty,” “Pendulum Swings,” and “My Finish Line.”
This year’s conference will also feature a short film contest. Prizes are awarded for categories such as best short film, best actor/actress, best cinematography, and best sound.
Founded by Rodney and Lori Marett, the Gideon is in its fourth year. “I wanted to help fellow brothers and sisters get the required training and make connections on the East Coast, which comprise the Media Arts part of Gideon. Rodney took his music festival experience and put on a film festival. That’s how the Gideon was created!” explains Lori, a multi-awarded screenwriter who knew that there were other Christians being led into the media but who, like her, also did not feel that God was calling them to go to Hollywood in order to pursue their craft.
The Gideon faculty is composed of a large array of talented individuals, including award- winning cinematographer Arledge Armenaki (“Wesley,” “Life in the Carolinas”), writer and producer Brian Bird (“Not Easily Broken,” “Step by Step”), KatzKasting owner and casting director Katrina Cook (“Warrior”), actress Bonnie Johnson (“The Trial”), actor Michael Joiner (“The Grace Card”), comedian, actor, screenwriter, and humor columnist Torry Martin, producer and director Kenny Saylors (“Kimjongilia”), film producer, media personality, and PR expert Cheryl Ariaz Wicker (“Flag of My Father”), filmmaker Gary Voelker, actress Callan White-Hinman (“Loving,”) and ChristianCinema.com’s Angela Walker. Other faculty members include Ben Avery, Art Ayris, Shelly Ballestero, Jenny Cote, Erica Lane, Dave Moody, Ken Rainey, Rusty Whitener, Josiah Williams, Gary Zelasko, and more.
Cheryl Ariaz Wicker will be splitting her faculty duties with providing coverage of the festival for joltleft.com as well as daily video podcasts during the week of Gideon on Christian Movie Connect and a daily blog on ChristianMovieConnect.com and CherylWicker.com. The production team for the daily media coverage will include Arledge Armenaki as videographer, along with a team of Western Carolina University scholarship students to turn out the daily podcasts and blogs.
