The Lancaster JetHawks will once again host Local Heroes Week to honor local law enforcement and safety organizations. This is the third year the JetHawks have hosted this program which began with a Sunday softball game between the L.A. County Fire Department and the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department called Guns vs Hoses.
This year the event has been expanded to a full week of events and now includes the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the California Department of Corrections, the U.S. Forest Service and American Medical Response (AMR).
Some good-natured ribbing was on tap when the charity softball game was announced.
“This is a great event. It’s been very fun,” said Mike Rust, Public Information Officer for the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the first year we spanked the fire department in the softball game. The second year we were a little lighter on them. We allowed them to win by one run. So this year’s game will be very interesting.”
“Obviously the Sheriff didn’t know we had all of our star players both years on shift that day and they were working,” responded Jim Kross, Assistant Fire Chief for the L.A. Fire Department. “We made sure they were all off shift this year, so it shouldn’t be a problem for us to take that trophy home.”
The three games will be held on July 24. First up is AMR taking on the Forest Service at 10 am followed by the Department of Corrections against the CHP at 11:30 am and culminating with the third annual Guns vs. Hoses game between the Sheriff’s Department and the Fire Department at 1 pm. The JetHawks will take on Lake Elsinore at 5 pm and $3 from every ticket sold at the stadium that day will be donated to the Fallen Heroes Foundation.
“We’re excited to have expanded this event into an entire home stand of activities, as well as getting multiple organizations to become a part of this special fundraiser for charity,” said Derek Sharp, Jethawks Interim General Manager. “We’re equally pleased to have one of our own partners, First City Credit Union, participating as a sponsor of this event which will be highlighted by the Guns vs. Hoses softball game.” First City has been a credit union for the Sheriff’s Department for 74 years.
Each organization will also have their own night at the ballpark to sell tickets as a fundraiser. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to the charity of their choice. Scheduled nights are July 20 for AMR and the CHP; July 21 is the Department of Corrections and the Forest Service; July 22 is the L.A. County Fire Department; and July 23 is the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
