A 52-year-old Oxford man was in court Friday for arraignment on a charge of first degree murder after his daughter, beaten with a baseball bat on May 9, died of her wounds Wednesday morning. Robert Kelly was ordered detained in the Oakland County Jail without bond.
On May 9, Kelly’s adult daughter Megan Roberts, 20, was found by her mother severely beaten. She had been struck several times by an aluminum baseball bat. Some of the blows were to Megan’s head, resulting in a serious closed head injury.
Moments after the attack, Robert Kelly, a pschologist, went to the Oxford Police Station and turned himself in. During conversations with investigators, Kelly admitted responsibility for the assault. He claimed he beat his daughter with a baseball bat as she was sleeping.
Meanwhile, Megan Roberts was admilled to the Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital Regional Medical Unit. She was alive but comatose.
Robert Kelly was arraigned in 52-3 district court on a charge of assault with intent to murder.
Unfortunately, Megan Roberts never emerged from her coma and died Wednesday. That meant the charges against Robert Kelly had to be upgraded.
He appeared Friday to be arraigned on a charge of first degree premeditated murder. If convicted, he would face a mandatory sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
Robert Kelly has never explained the motivation behind the beating.
