The musical chemistry Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood have rivals that of Country music legends like Johnny and June Cash. Firstly, It must be noted that “Remind Me” is not the first escapade the two have embarked on. On Paisley’s 5th Gear, Underwood lended her vocals on the unreleased track “Oh Love.”
Additionally, Brad made a “live” video cameo on Carrie’s 2009 All-Star Holliday program which aired December 7, 2009 on FOX. As Brad was on tour at the time, he appeared via a satellite video and rocked the house with her on a Country classic, “Lousiana Woman, Mississippi Man.”
However, this is their first adventure into a collaborative video effort, and the result is inspiring. The video for “Remind Me” is rather simplistic in terms of production, but heavy handed in metaphorical syrup. If the lyrics are any indication, the golden children of Country music turn up the heat…in the desert.
Underwood, in a yellow and blue flowing dress, and Paisley, in his signature jeans and T-shirt, are stranded in in the middle of a relationship wasteland, completely cut off from each other. It is quick to make snap judgments regarding the simple nature of this interpretation, but the sheer vocal prowess of Underwood is something to be revered. Brad, comparitively, is the perfect balance with sweet and soothing vocals that give off a sense of “keeping his cool.” This is evident in his reserved approach to the emotional range of his character. This is not to discredit, however, the impeccable job in portraying the intensity of the moment. Throughout the video, the couple are struggling to “remind” each other of those cherishable moments that fueled the passion of their relationship to begin with.
As the music swells, the two slowly make their way closer to each other. The camera swirls around them, Carrie’s dress feathers in the wind, and Brad breaks out a killer guitar solo. It does not even matter that his guitar is unplugged; it is the thought that counts here. In the last thirty seconds, Carrie, as hinted by her facial expressions, is knee deep in emotional mayhem as she gestures to herself and then with arms open wide.
By the end, It is unclear whether the relationship was salvaged or if the ship continued to sink, but the musical gold that is minded by these two leaves all that to our lucky imagination.
