A motorist that police believe may be attempting suicide, drove his car off the I-805 overpass.
Around 6:30 Friday, the car went airborne after going over the guard rail at the Eastgate Mall overpass, just north of Miramar Road. (See video on left) It sailed in the air before landing on the I-805 southbound lanes, about 100 feet below. It was a miracle that he did not land on another car.
The driver was trapped inside, upside down in the vehicle. He suffered major trauma and was taken to the hospital. He was conscious, and raised his hand in the air as he was being taken to the emergency vehicle.
“I saw the car falling in the air and then hit the freeway,” Emily Sandan told San Diego Union Tribune. “It was like something from a movie. I was really shaken. It was incredible that he did not hit anyone.” Sandan was driving home on I-805 northbound when she saw the incident.
The man indicated, as he was being put on the gurney, that he was trying to end his life.
