A weak stationary boundary will oscillate northwest to southeast across the Capital Region through the day today bringing a slight chance of some afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The front will act to keep the airmass over the region humid and sticky.
Hurricane Irene was making steady progress north and northeastward from the Outer Banks of North Carolina early this morning. She is forecast to be in the vicinity of the Delmarva Peninsula this evening, and over the New York City / Long Island area by Sunday morning. The storm is then forecast to track inland over Interior New England and become loose its tropical characteristics over Eastern Canada by Sunday evening.
Our region appears to be in line for not only a soaking, excessive rainfall, but also a prolonged period of strong and gusty winds beginning later tonight and lasting through the day on Sunday. Tropical Storm Warnings and Flood Watches have been issued by the National Weather Service for the entire region through that period.
