“What is going on with Canelo? I hear he is fighting Alfonso Gomez the same night as Mayweather,” said amateur boxer known as Speedy Gonzales, when I met him at Starbucks on Western and Glenoaks this morning:” Is it going to be in Las Vegas?”
“No, Canelo and Gomez are fighting at Staples Center in LA,” I replied.
“ This is a historic and unprecedented night for boxing,” stated Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions: “ As we showcase Mayweather, Ortiz, Alvarez and Gomez from two iconic and world renowned venues in Staples Center in Los Angles, the capitol of sports and entertainment and MGM grand in Las Vegas, truly the boxing mega center of the world. This show now is even more loaded with stars, and to have Alvarez vs. Gomez join magnificent boxing match up of the year between Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz is exactly why we named the fight “Star Power”, which is expected to set attendance and viewership records in one night.”
If you are at Stapples Center in Los Angeles on September 17th, you can see Alvarez vs. Gomez live and then Mayweather and Ortiz on a jumbo TV screen. If you are in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, you can see Alvarez Gomez fight on the screen which will be followed by live Mayweather Ortiz bout. If you are at home on your couch you can order HBO PPV and watch both fights and more for only fifty bucks.
“I am very happy,” said Alvarez when I interviewed him yesterday in Los Angles about sharing the bill with Mayweather:” It’s a great card; both sides. I am enjoying this.” May be this is a promoters strategy, putting a rising star, Canelo Alvarez together with one of the top fighters in the sport, Floyd Mayweather, so that hey could face each other some time in the future.
“Hopefully that fight happens,” said Alvarez about possibility of facing Mayweather:” May be soon, may be later, but I am into that fight with Mayweather.”
For now, undefeated Saul Alvarez will defend his WBC light middleweight title against well thought-of Alfonso Gomez who gained popularity through his participation on the first season of Contender.
Alfonso Gomez(23-4-2,12 KO’S), who won his last fights, all by stoppage, promised that he would die in the ring on September 17thor die trying to liberate Alvarez from his belt.
“It’s going to be the same story like with other opponents,” said Alvarez who turned twenty one a week ago:” They are talking this and that, but nothing happens. I’ve been showing in my fights that I’ve been improving and I am winning my fights with a good effort and very clearly and it’s going to be the same thing with Alfonso Gomez.” Last time out in Mexico, Saul Alvarez (37-0-1,27KO’S) looked sensational when he dominated and stopped in the twelfth round British veteran Ryan Rhodes. Yet despite his obvious improvements, every one wants a piece of red freckled, baby faced looking champion from Guadalajara.
“Yes, everybody wants to fight me,” said Alvarez:” I don’t know the reason, but I noticed that everybody wants to fight me. I am going to prepare very well like Alfonso Gomez. If he beats me in the ring it’s because he was the best.”
Just in case Gomez can’t beat Alvarez, WBC has ordered a mandatory title eliminator between hard punching, Alfredo Angulo and undefeated former Olympian from Glendale, California, Vanes Martirosyan. Both fighters have called out Canelo Alvarez recently.
“They are both very good fighters and they deserve a shot with me,” said Alvarez:” I know they are good fighters, but I am going to prepare very well for any body, whoever it is going to be Angulo or Martirosyan. The first thing is Alfonso Gomez and then we can talk about those guys.”
Speaking about preparation, Manny Pacquaio heir apparent, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is going back to Big Bear to get ready for his upcoming showdown with Alfonso Gomez. Stay tuned for further developments.
