Team Canada got off to a rough start at the FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying event in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
Canada lost their opening game 69-57 to Brazil.
Canada played Brazil tight, as they were only down by one, 47-46 heading into the fourth quarter. But a weak fourth quarter offensively by the Canadians, gave the Brazilians a strong twelve point win.
The Canadians could not get much going offensively whastsoever. No player delivered double digits in scoring, with Jermaine Anderson leading Canada with nine points.
If Canada is going to get one of the two Olympic qualifying spots or one of three spots to the second chance qualifier in July, they will simply need to take more high percentage shots and have more consistent offense throughout the entire game. I felt at times point guard Cory Joseph showed his inexperience. The Brazilian defense came up huge when it mattered most, limiting Team Canada to only 11 fourth quarter points. Marcelo Huertas led Brazil in scoring with 17 points.
Canada’s next game is against the Dominican Republic tomorrow at 3pm MT on TSN2.
