Following his near win at the Indy 500, Sausalito native JR Hildebrand certainly has the talent to pull it off at his home track, Infineon. Hildebrand has controlled the race for Sunoco Rookie of the Year since the beginning of the season, however James Hinchcliffe has tightened up the race. Hildebrand, a former winner at Sonoma in Firestone Indy Lights, leads Hinchcliffe by 17 points heading into the final road course of the season. Can Hildebrand, who began his racing career racing go-karts at Infineon Raceway, strengthen his case for Rookie of the Year at his home race?
On another note last year’s Sonoma winner, Will Power who trails point leader Dario Franchitti, looks for a win again to gain on Franchitti in the points race for the championship.
The Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma has featured six different winners since the series’ first visit to Sonoma: Tony Kanaan, 2005; Marco Andretti, 2006; Scott Dixon, 2007; Helio Castroneves, 2008; Dario Franchitti, 2009; and Will Power, 2010. Can one of these drivers become the first repeat winner at Infineon Raceway or will another new face find their way to Wine Country Winners Circle?
Team Penske looks to add to its dominance at Infineon Raceway. The team has won a pair of IZOD IndyCar Series races at the track, including Will Power’s win from pole last year, and won the pole position twice. Will Ganassi’s trio of Will Power, Helio Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe provide team owner Roger Penske with more hardware this weekend?
Coming off his fourth podium in five races, Scott Dixon looks to ride his recent success back into the title picture. Can Dixon, who won at Sonoma in 2007 and finished second last season, get a second win at Infineon Raceway and make the championship a three-man race?
Ryan Briscoe hopes his past success at Infineon Raceway can lead him to Victory Lane. The Australian won his first IZOD IndyCar Series pole at Infineon Raceway in 2005 and has finished second at the track two of the last three years. Can Briscoe score his first win of 2011 in Sonoma?
The Andretti name has been a major part of open-wheel racing history and the latest generation of the famed family hopes to recapture his success in Sonoma. Marco Andretti, whose grandfather Mario finished second in the first Indy car race at the track, returns to the site his first IZOD IndyCar Series win. Can Marco, who also won at the track in Firestone Indy Lights, regain his winning form on the Infineon circuit and help his father Michael score his third win at the track as an owner?
These and many other questions will be answered on Sunday August 28th at the IZOD Indycar Series race held at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma.
