This week the Burning Man festival has blossomed from the sands of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert and in about a month its virtual cousin, the Burn 2 festival, will open in Second Life®.
Burn 2 is the current incarnation of one of Second Life’s oldest traditions, the Burning Life festival, which dates back to Second Life’s beta days of 2003. In those busy days of bringing this new virtual world to life, its founder Phillip Rosedale wasn’t able to make his customary fall pilgrimage to Burning Man, so he recreated it into Second Life. It’s continued every year since. Last year Burning Life became independent of Linden Lab and morphed into Burn 2.
The dates for the Second Life festival this year at October 1-9. As always, it will be a bursting forth of creative energy and free spirit that as much as possible echoes the spirit of the Burning Man festival and stresses values that include non-commercialism, gifting, self-reliance, civic responsibility, and leaving no trace. You can read the Ten Principles that guide both Burning Man and Burn 2 at www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html .
Burn 2 is run entirely by volunteers, many of them also Burning Man regulars. If you can devote some time and energy, you can help and meet some interesting people in the process. There are ten departments within the Burn 2 organization:
- Art Dept
- Communications Dept
- Community Services
- Dept of Mutant Vehicles
- Dept of Public Works
- Lamplighters Dept
- Performance Dept
- Rangers Dept
If you’re interested in helping out at Burn 2, you can learn more at www.burn2.org/volunteer-signup . This writer is a Lamplighter and Ranger.
Live performances are an important part of Burn 2. If you’re a performer or DJ, you can learn more about performing there at burn2.org/performer%20signup.
If you can contribute a little financially, your help is needed. Linden Lab no longer finances the festival. Its survival is dependent on donations. You can learn more at www.burn2.org/sim_gifting .
