One of the two go-to pets that people have are cats with the other obviously being dogs. Rio Blanco County residents are no exception to the rule when it comes to owning cats as pets. It doesn’t matter where you go in the county you will run into a fair share of cats as pets. Some are strictly inside pets and others are either outside pets or outside helpers of keeping away mice or snakes. No matter what their purpose they all deserve love and care.
If you already have one cat or multiple cats you are already familiar with what sort of care and attention cats need. Stay tuned for a future article about cat care for first time cat owners. Those of you familiar with cat care and the proud owner of one or more cats may at some point bring home another cat though. The easy part of this is that you will already own the things you need more then likely and will not need to go make a lot of big purchases. That doesn’t mean though that you simply can bring home the cat and all will be normal right away.
If you have outside cats and are bring home a new outside cat you are lucky to have a lot of space. Cats can be very jealous creatures and when a new cat comes in there can be tension. If they are outside they are more able to give each other space for a few weeks until your current cat gets used to the idea of the new cat. Just give them time to figure out the pecking order and to get over the jealousy. If however there is more then just the hissing and there are actual fights happening where somebody may get hurt you might want to consider that your cat is a cat that needs to not have other cats.
When you bring home an outside cat your first worry is probably that they will not want to stick around. If you bring home a kitten you have a much better chance of them sticking around because they will be too scared to wander off and as they get used to being fed there they will stay where they are fed. Older cats on the other hand may or may not choose to stay. There isn’t a whole lot you can do to ensure they will stay besides possibly keeping them confined in a barn or shed for a few days for them to get used to the surroundings and making sure to feed them regularly. You may want to feed them separately from your other cat or cats for a few days to help the jealousy a bit.
When you bring home any inside cat whether it is your first or your fifth, you at least don’t have to worry about it running away. If it isn’t your first though you will for sure have to probably deal with some jealousy issues. Cats like to be the center of your universe on their own terms and another new cat can get in the way. They will get over it in time though and usually end up the best of friends. Give them time and feed them separately if need be. Make sure you are still giving ample attention to your cat that you already had so they still feel loved even with the new addition.
When you have multiple cats indoors you may want to consider having multiple litter boxes. It will help with how often you need to clean them and give each cat some options as to what to use. This can help keep things much more hygienic for all. Many vets and other sources recommend that you have one litter box per cat and some recommend that you have one litter box per cat plus one extra.
Whether your new cat will be inside or outside it is important to make sure you get it all the necessary shots. Contact your local vet to schedule an appointment for shots and a check up. This article outlines the vets available for Rio Blanco County Residents if you don’t already have a vet.
