The wait is almost over, as “Breaking Bad” is set to debut its fourth season this Sunday night on AMC. And while the official trailer offers us a sneak peek at what looks to be a season-long Walt/Gus power struggle, the biggest answer we can possibly receive should be revealed within minutes of the premiere.
Story: From ‘Louie’ to ‘Breaking Bad’ – Ranking the top shows of 2010
Did Jesse kill Gale? Or has Gale lived to see another day?
This time last year, the question seemed ludicrous.
On the season three finale of “Breaking Bad,” Jesse arrived at Gale’s apartment gun in hand, eyes teary, remorse already setting in.
As he lifted the gun to Gale’s head (with Gale begging for his life), the camera panned around Jesse and quickly cut to black as the sound of a gunshot was heard.
Seems pretty definitive, right?
You’d think so. But there’s this little beast called the Internet, and following the finale, fans flooded TV forums with theories of what did (and didn’t) happen.
Did Jesse shoot and miss? Did the panning of the camera imply that Jesse changed his sights? Was it all in his head?
“Breaking Bad” producer Vince Gilligan commented on the finale several months back, suggesting that after reading the comments of fans, he was considering altering the intention of the finale.
If Gale were to live, it would seem to be a grave mistake for the series, as that one moment would forever change Jesse’s story arc. The presumed murder of Gale was, at that moment, a horrible but necessary act in order to preserve Jesse and Walt’s survival.
It’s easy to have faith in the people behind “Breaking Bad.” They’ve given us three seasons of some of the best television to hit the small screen in over a decade. But the opening of season four is important—did Jesse kill Gale and, in effect, break bad like Walter White?
Or did Jesse shoot and miss Gale, thus showing us the power fans wield when they collectively gather on the ‘net to analyze their beloved show?

In Boston, “Breaking Bad” will air on Sunday night on AMC.
