It has now become time to think the unthinkable and that is that the Republicans want to default on the national debt as part of creating a self made crisis into which they can inject their own Milton Friedman Shock Doctrine solutions and take over the country. You might remember that one of Friedman’s pronouncements was that a crisis whether real or artificially created could provide a moment so disorienting that the ones with the ideas ready could step into the breach and put their agenda into practice before the opposition could offer opposition. That formula has been used all over the world starting with the CIA backed military coup in Chile that assassinated the popularly elected president Salvadore Allende and installed Augusto Pinochet and his military dictatorship. The economic philophy was provided by Milton Friedman and some his of students at University of Chicago to Pinochet and Chile was the experiment from which sprang globalization as we know and the world suffers under it today.
You might be interested in what Friedman’s dictates for an economy are. He believed that to put his economic ideas into practice you needed to begin with a clean slate. ( a debt ceiling collapse would do this) Each government pushed into Friedman’s Free Market Capitalism had to do three things, cut social spending like Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid to the bone, cut taxes for the Rich, and privatize everything that wasn’t nailed down. Friedman by the way was a big proponent of privatizing the public schools and he and his wife supported school vouchers through the Hoover Institute at Stanford University.
Boehner’s proposals should give everyone pause to wonder about the Speakers motives. He has seen the polls and knows that eighty percent of the American public believes in shared sacrifice yet he keeps refusing any revenue increases but he continues to propose solutions like three trillion in cuts including Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security that he knows full well no Democrat could possibly support if they want to be reelected without raising taxes on the Rich. When Democrats refuse to cut that deal he then statesObama isn’t trying to negotiate.
Today as I write this news story Boehner is trying to propose as his latest proposal the failed Cut, Cap and Balance bill that was rejected by Democrats in both houses and he has even added a two stage debt ceiling process that would enable another hostage taking before the election for another debt ceiling crisis and something that would be ripe for ramming American Legislative Exchange Council legislation down America’s throats when Republicans force the default. This is the idea of a Super Congress to make recommendations and pass them on to the rest of our elected representatives to vote on either up or down. It is clear the one being totally unreasonable is Boehner himself because we are learning that a short term raising of the debt ceiling will not provide sufficient stability to the markets so that the worlds economy could act as if we defaulted anyway with Boehner’s proposal even if Democrats caved in an agreed to it.
In the hoopla and absolute Republican lying about how we got here we forget that the deficit is largely the product of three things, the economic collapse that began in 2007, the unpaid for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Bush tax cuts. A study by Sam Pizzigatti at the Institute for Policy Studies shows that if we raised taxes back to what they were in the 1960’s the budget deficit would dissappear. Michael Linden, Seth Hanlon and Jordan Eizenga at the Center for American Progress have demonstrated that the United States is in fact a very low tax country compared to other developed nations. Of course that is not what Republicans want you to believe but you can see for yourself.
It is a sad commentary upon our dysfunctional political system made more so by money and ideology but I believe we have reached the place where one party will destroy this nation economically just to get their way. Remember it was only last week that Mitch McConnell said something to the effect that we needed to change the Consttution because people were listening to the Democrats and not doing what Republicans wanted. Friedman himself believed that Capitalism and Freedom could only exist together. So this would form the framework of a coup against the American people. We had to collapse the economy to save America from that Socialist Obama.
Here is an interesting piece of trivia on Obama and Socialism. I will bet you didn’t know that Nixon once championed a public option for every American as a solution for health care issues. We know Obama didn’t so that leaves Obama to the right of Richard Nixon. If Democrats decide to cave in and agree to this they have loosed Boehner’s death star of an economic proposal and we will be held hostage again and again until this nation doesn’t even resemble the nation most of us were born in and grew up in but for the party that refuses to believe in Darwin’s theories for biology they seem to have no trouble with it for economics.
