The music video for “The Chills” is primarily shot in black and white, and the only real color comes from the love interests bright red dress. The lyrics have a heartbreak theme, but the song itself is done in an up-temp manner. It was nice to see Blue October shoot a fun and energetic music video that went along with the musical aspects rather than the lyrics.
It would have been easy to go with a story line music video that has a theme of lead vocalist Justin Furstenfeld being in a torn relationship. Instead, the band chose to create a story line that really has nothing to do with a relationship, and it actually works with the song.
The young group of friends featured in the music video look to be in their twenties and certain things that they do mirror shots of Blue October doing the same activities. For example, the friends shoot off fireworks, then it shows the Blue October men having fun with fireworks. There is also a scene in which the very beautiful girl in the red dress walks straight through the crowd to come face to face with lead vocalist Justin. In the next shot she is face to face with one of the guys from the group of friends at the beach.
Overall Blue October’s “The Chills” music video is a must watch because it was nicely shot and does not revolve around a cliché girl leaves boy premise.
