On exhibit at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) in Fort Lauderdale is a spirited look at African American lifestyle as experienced in other areas of the diaspora, a sultry celebration of rich culture and a confrontation of social issues facing the community. The show, titled, ‘Out of Many, One’, opened on August 17, is a collaboration of three of South Florida’s leading artists, Photodigital and Fine Artist, Louis Davis, Painter, Philip Curtis and Photographer, David Muir.
First to be discussed is ‘Black on Black Violence is Self Genocide’ by Louis Davis. The artist, by nature, is a social activist who identifies issues in a multifaceted and multilayered form requiring interactivity from the viewer. Possibly, by the fourth trip to the same piece, eyes and brain begin an ‘onion effect’ of discovering deeply personal interpretations of the artist’s insights into social problems. Black on Black Violence is Self Genocide’ captures the insanity of what violence does on so many levels. On one level it’s killing brothers and sisters. At a closer glance it’s killing self. On another level, the effects on future generations get implicated by the haunting silhouette of a toddler in the background of the composition. Although the piece depicts a violent scene, upon closer inspection it actually places the individual’s conscience under arrest as crime sheds the blood of the community present and future. Stray bullets stop one victim but the effects ricochet, stagnating the progress of family and community development.
Louis Davis’ works on display addresses various struggles of the African American in particular, serving as a social scientist, dissecting the problem down to the core and a social police, blowing a whistle to awaken social consciousness. In general, the artist demonstrates that the African American’s concern is a major concern for the betterment of humanity. In his own words, Louis Davis says, ‘I am an artist and my art is, as is the subjects of my advocacy, worldwide in scope’.
With a number of prestigious awards, group shows and one man exhibits, Louis Davis art is sold nationally and internationally. An alumnus of the University of the West Indies and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, the artist has been in the field for more than twenty years and has lived in Florida for the past ten. ‘Out of Many, One’ is on display through October 2011.
