The annual Bev Wright “For the Cure” event held at Cypress Lanes has grown each year since its inception. And this year was no exception.
The Mixed Doubles event, in only its second year, drew 65 teams to Cypress Lanes on Saturday. Players from Orlando, Tampa, and other areas throughout central Florida rolled three doubles games and total pins with handicap determined the winning team.
This year’s top honors went to Billy Forgue and Renae Collins who put up a 1328 scratch set. The addition of their handicap made their total 1601; nearly 120 pins more than the runner up finishers Kyle Calcote and MaryAnn Watson. Third place went to Jim and Jean Cheshier with a 1471 set.
Not only did Forgue and Collins put up the winning set, Forgue shot an 814 series on the way to claiming the Mixed Doubles title with his partner. For their efforts, Forgue and Collins earned the $600 top prize.
A Senior Mixed Doubles event was also added to the slate of events in this year’s tournament. Thirty-one mixed doubles pairs aged 50 and over participated in this inaugural event with a guaranteed top prize of $500.
After three doubles games, Lucy Sandelin and Willie Vargas claimed top honors with 1534 set, including handicap. Runners up Dale and Joyce Wilkinson finished with 1472. Third place went to Michael and Peg Wiltsie with 1438.
The Beverly J. Wright Memorial Fund was founded by Virginia Wright to honor her dear friend, Bev, who lost her battle with breast cancer. Each year, Virginia and the Bev Wright staff organize and run a benefit tournament with portions of each entry donated to the Susan G. Komen foundation in Bev’s name. Each year, since inception, the tournament has continued to grow in participation as new events are added to accommodate the demand for competitive bowling. Sponsors and volunteers donate time and money to aid in the fight to “Keep the ball rolling” in Bev’s name.
