The fifth annual Beverly Wright Memorial Tournament to benefit breast cancer research will be held at Cypress Lanes in Winter Haven this weekend, July 16-17. Due to tournament popularity and demand for events for male participants, tournament directors have added two additional events to this year’s lineup.
The first new event is Senior Mixed Doubles. Saturday, July 16 at 9:30 AM, bowlers ages 50 and up can partner for the Senior Mixed Doubles event. Bowlers will roll three doubles games with handicap based on 90% of 230. The entry fee is $60 per doubles team and the top prize is guaranteed at $500. The field is limited to 80 teams and entries are still available.
The Regular Mixed Doubles event will also be held on July 16. Check-in for bowlers is at 12:30 PM with bowling beginning at 1:00 PM. Last year was the first Mixed Doubles event and it was extremely well received. Tournament officials are hoping for an even larger turnout this year and are offering a $600 top prize based on 60 entries. Handicap for this three game event is 90% of 230 and the field is limited to 80 teams. Entry fee for this event is $60 per doubles team.
The second new event is the Open Scratch event. The entry fee is $75 per bowler. Bowling begins at 4:00 PM on July 16. Bowlers will roll five games and total pinfall will determine the winner. The top prize is $750 based on 48 entries. This event is open to all USBC sanctioned bowlers regardless of average.
The final event of the weekend is the Beverly J. Wright Memorial Tournament. This tournament is handicap with an optional scratch entry open to all USBC certified women. Bowling begins at 9:30 AM Sunday, July 17. Bowlers will roll five games. Total pinfall plus handicap will determine the winner in the handicap division while total pinfall will determine the winner of the scratch division. Entry fee is $50 for scratch or handicap and $90 for both. First and second place in the handicap division are guaranteed at $750 and $500 respectively while first and second in the scratch division are guaranteed at $500 and $250 respectively. Handicap for this event is 90% of 220.
Bowlers in all events must be USBC certified and must have a verifiable average. Bowlers will use their highest 2010-2011 average with a minimum of 21 games bowled. A current summer league average may only be used if 21 games have been bowled. A bowler without a verifiable, 21 game current league average may only enter the scratch events.
Although the entry deadline on the tournament website is July 8, tournament directors have said that entries are still available by calling the Kegel Connection Pro Shop at Cypress Lanes at 863-294-8451 or by calling Cypress Lanes at 863-294-3295.
