The Bengals have signed OT Andrew Whitworth to a contract extension running through the 2015 season.
Whitworth (6-7, 335; Louisiana State) is a sixth-year NFL player. He was a second-round Cincinnati draft choice in 2006 and enters this season with 74 Bengals games and 70 starts. He started every game the last two seasons (including postseason) at LOT. He has also served as a team captain.
“Whit is a very fine player and also a team leader, so this is obviously good news for our team,” said head coach Marvin Lewis. “It’s good to get this done before the regular season begins, and I credit our front office as well as his side for making it happen.”
In other news, the Bengals signed free agent DT Cornell Banks, a rookie from Fresno State. Banks (6-2, 310) signed as a college free agent with Baltimore on July 28. He played in the Ravens’ first two preseason games (no statistics) and was waived by the Ravens’ on Aug. 27.
Additionally, the Bengals media schedule for this Saturday and Sunday has been revised:
Sat., Sept. 3 — Players off; Roster cut to 53 will be announced; no media access.
Sun., Sept. 4 — Marvin Lewis news conference at noon; no further media access.
