Sunday, Discovery Channel kicks off its annual “Shark Week” schedule. This year, the week-long event will be “hosted” by comedian and “Chief Shark Officer” Andy Samberg.
Samberg was in the Bahamas this Spring filming segments for Shark Week with Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas, a scuba diving operation that dives with sharks on a daily basis. Samberg met Stuart and Michelle Cove and learned about how to be in the water with Caribbean Reef Sharks and other species that populate the warm Bahamian waters.
While some would have expected Samberg to get up close and personal with the sharks, he explained that actually didn’t happen the way he anticipated, telling TV Guide Magazine, “I’d imagined maybe getting into scuba gear and getting in a cage, but I ended up in chain mai floating on a surfboard with a bike helmet on.”
The Dive Bahamas operation has been involved with Shark Week productions for more than a decade. Stuart Cove, well-known “Hollywood Shark Wrangler” is frequently called upon to assist when sharks are required for a production. Michelle Cove is a prominent shark expert in her own right and is also often called upon for underwater stunt work or as a double.
Shark Week is one of the most popular programs on cable televison each year. Discovery Channel has developed a winning formula that combines education, research and stunning visuals.
