Today is “The Duchess who wasn’t day” celebrated every August 27th to honor author Margaret Wolfe Hungerford. She wrote under the pen name “The Duchess”. Her most remembered line is “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” from the novel Molly Bawn. What one person believes is beautiful another person may think is not to their liking.
There are different definitions of beauty even in dentistry. Patients usually want straight white teeth and get whitening and orthodontic work in order to achieve these results. More recently there has been a demand for tooth tattoos. A dental lab will make a crown with a tattoo on it (photo in slide show attached) and your dentist can attach it to your tooth for you. There is a step by step guide on how to get a tooth tattoo on ehow.com. You can even have a picture made of your pet parakeet, the Fox News logo or President Obama in your mouth on one of your teeth.
Dental Grillz or Grills are a truly unique fashion statement. They are usually worn covering the front teeth and brings an extra sparkle to the smile. There are different types of Grills. There are gold grills, ice grills that are silver and custom grills which are a combination of shapes, colors and gems. Many grills are diamond studded as well. There is a web page where you can see people from Milwaukee showing off their grills. A shop called Gold Front on 34th and W. North Avenue in Milwaukee sells grills and they have made a video about their store. It is on the lower left of this page.
Fangs or sharpened teeth are all the rage with some people. Actually sharpening teeth is not recommended. An alternative is painting the teeth to look sharp. A video on Youtube entitled How to: Sharp Teeth is a very helpful guide to showing painting techniques. In Indonesia some tribes consider chiseled teeth a sign of beauty. Sharpening teeth has been made illegal by the Indonesian government. National geographic made a video about tooth filing of a tribal chief’s wife in Indonesia. It damages the teeth but the chief’s wife believes she is more beautiful with sharp teeth. It might be difficult to find a dentist who will actually sharpen all your teeth to points in Wisconsin but they do file teeth sometimes to match the neighboring teeth in length.
These are a few of the areas where beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Margaret Wolfe Hungerford or the “The Duchess” was born on April 27, 1855 in Cork Ireland so I am not sure why her holiday is celebrated today. This holiday is all about accepting that different people have different tastes. What is considered gorgeous to one person may be seen as tacky or ugly to someone else. Beauty is grillz to one person and sharpened teeth to another. Celebrate the differences today.
