A female corporate lawyer – Abducted by a stranger who names her only as Carol, takes revenge on the wrong woman and slices her face open. A beast of with a lions face and of literary analogy finds her and carries her to his palace where he gives her great rest. He lays her on a soft bed and tells her she is where no one can hurt her anymore.
Katherine tells the beast, “I’ll try,” After he begs her not to be afraid. “How could you bring a stranger down here to where you live?” “How could you?” “How could I have turned my back on her and left her there.” He tells his friend who is always bossing him around and giving him his narrow-minded advice that could have caused her murder.
In a palace at ground zero, Katherine promises she’ll keep Vincent’s location a secret. A forgotten place, below the New York City subway, he tells her that’s where he was once found – By the hospitol of St. Vincent. While the headlines advertise her disappearance, Vincent calms her. He offers to fetch tea and read to her. A boy brings her tea just as she is unbandaging her scarred face – She turns and in a moment of both sporadic and protective fear, she gets a good look at the damage done to her face, and throws something at him.
She feels bad about this. She did not mean to hurt him – But it opens the way for her to discuss what happened to her. “It’s not a nightmare.” The beastly prince assures her it happened. He claims this will make her stronger – She tells him she has not the strength he has, even while in love with him just as he is. She pulls his hood away and he forces her to return to her world. “Your secret is safe with me. I would never betray your trust.” At the opening of the subway, Vincent flees when he hears voices. Katherine, forced to consider walking through the corriders of her office, her face so scarred and ugly trips and falls over her own two feet – Crashing to the floor, the only thing she can hear is the cruel laughter and the wicked taunts of her mocking enemies.
As tears fill her eyes, she turns to see Vincent, and just the sight of his face calms her. She reads Great Expectations in the hospitol bed while she recovers, just the way Vincent once read to her. Once the plastic surgery reassembles her face, the large corporate law firm she works for decides to put her out into the field. Katherine meets Isaac Stubbs. “You don’t want anything like that to ever happen again.” Isaac is her private self-defense trainer. “I’m sorry Kathy,” says the receptionist about her face.” “Don’t be. It’s an old picture.”
The princely beast argues with his friend that Kathy does make him happy, not unhappy. Lying to him, his friend tells him that the only reason he loves Kathy is because of his gift to feel compassion. Katherine, not necessarily all wrapped up in physical appearance just loves him for the self she sees. Katherine finds herself trying to help Carol, the other victim. And after her next self-defense meeting, a man who she feels nothing for, but who is simply aggressive kisses her anyway. One night, Vincent shows up on her patio – She tells him she is so glad to see him. She begs him to come inside, and has him sit down by her in a chair.
An escort service, named Mayfair, owned by one Marty Belmont, now at issue – Katherine uses her power of legal skills to help the abused woman, encouraging her to testify against this evil man. “Fraud. Extortion. Aggravated assault for starters. A man with a tatooed arm shows up at the courthouse and when Carol is murdered by this man, her throat slit wide open and the other thug – The beast immediately feels Katherine’s danger. Even in his separate location, he drops what he is doing to come to her rescue, and Carol’s self-defense pays off. Just in time for Vincent to bust through the door, and come to her rescue. Vincent surprised by his great power to rescue her, finds himself enamoured with Katherine.
