Since the beginning of the 2011 political season, certain political organizations, elected officials and even partisan leaning media outlets all had their picks and plans as to who they felt would, and should, become the next Baltimore City Mayor.
Candidates strategized for years for this year’s run, obtaining certain political favors and positions in order to secure their finances and positioning for a favorable run in a wide-open Mayoral race; that lacked the political leadership and entrenched incumbency usually the force-field that keeps most from even considering such a run. Political analysts dug up past election data, reviewed each possible mayoral candidate and scenario and tried to predict from early on who would come out victorious in an obvious raucous and wide open Primary. However, though many shall speculate, few and far between actually come close to being correct in their predictions.
Therefore, candidates then hire campaign advisors, managers and staff who subsequently obtain political focus groups, polls, strategists and more in order to tell them what works best in selling the voters in terms of messaging and communications, field strategy and turnout, as well as other insights into what their best possible chance is at victory in the fall. Yet any great strategist will tell them, while any credible and knowledgeable candidate will realize that the only poll that means anything at all is that of Election Days! Despite their internals, or even more credible, external polls which tell them they cannot win, or even those that tell them they cannot lose; you are never suppose to take these numbers as literal terms of finality.
You run your race based on being 20-points down despite whatever a poll says before or after a debate, or whatever a political analyst tries to assess based on past turnout figures and current registered voter numbers. For while most polls never actually obtain the insight of those less likely or questionable in their turnout, while usually only polling 1-3% of the total number of registered voters for any locality; most of the current Mayoral candidates seem to be basing their candidacies off of recent numbers that don’t appear to be what they seem. For instance, the Rolley camp recently released an e-blast ensuring that they are the front-runners along with incumbent Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, while the others have no chance. However, days later a Baltimore Sun poll revealed that Rawlings-Blake had a commanding lead, despite what others have pontificated regarding this election – the closest challenger in their poll, at least in terms of beating Rawlings-Blake, was that of state senator Catherine Pugh?
This shows you that a poll is easily manipulated based on who you ask and what you ask, while debates usually are a more scientific and proven method of persuasion based on having the candidates one-on-one with the voters of any local, state or national election. A televised or radio broadcasted debate does not alienate certain voters as it cannot adequately select its audience, leaving it open to any possible viewer or listener. However, with that said, most weak and unpopular candidates who either have high negatives or extremely difficult times articulating their message face to face, will either choose to bypass high-profiled debates, or do as current Mayor Rawlings-Blake has done – manipulate the process to make it work for you! Her mastery in this process is not proven as of yet, however she has the innate ability to rely on a supporter and ally who has mastered the art of trickery – former Baltimore Mayor and current Governor Martin O’Malley.
Since the beginning of this year’s election, when people were forging their alliances and predicting her demise, Rawlings-Blake was relying on a campaign staff either from out of state, or outside the city lines. While having the experience of an 18-month incumbency to tout, as well as the advantage of the Mayoral bully-pulpit, she had the ability to skip the majority of the citywide Mayoral debates without taking too much flack – in which she seemed to do without hesitation. However, the latest move proved her power while showing just how powerful a political ad buy can be to a television station and their executives, while also proving how easily someone can be bought and sold, or even manipulated in this process.
Having a Mayoral debate scheduled since June 30, 2011, Fox45 execs scheduled a joint mayoral contest that would appear both LIVE on Fox, as well as being streamed live to their partner’s website, valuemyvote2011.com. Yet, while making all the mayoral candidates ensure their commitment to this debate through a written confirmation, the conservative driven network ended up backing out without so much of a word or an apology to the rest of the mayoral field. While never seeming to obtain the commitment of one candidate, the charter-appointed incumbent Mayor Rawlings-Blake, Fox45 kept the other 5-candidates in limbo for months without offering so much as a peep into what would be done on the scheduled date and time of the debate – Monday, August 29th from 7-8P. While keeping their political partner group in the blind, who mind you brought them this debate idea and the commitment of all the candidates (except SRB) thereby ensuring that all Fox had to do was run the debate LIVE on television; it was later yanked from right under their nose (VMV2011) as Fox ended up forging a compromise with the Mayor, as well as the secondary and television station now set to run such debate – Maryland Public Television.
While the Mayor did not want to just say NO in terms of participating in the ONLY televised debate of the summer season, her campaign staff refused to have their candidate involved in a debate where one of the main organizers of the debate were one of the Mayor’s most fierce critics. Therefore, after expressing their concerns of a certain persons participation on the panel of questioners at the debate, and even after that person publicly backed off of the panel to suffice the Mayor’s request; MPT apparently scheduled a Mayoral debate for the same exact time and date as this Fox45 debate – weeks after Fox’s debate was already confirmed. While no other candidate knew about such debate at the time the Mayor’s office submitted their confirmation of being involved in such debate – showing the inexperience of a young communications staff – it became evident to all who was behind the formation of this new and mysterious MPT debate that no one ever heard of prior to this time.
Therefore, after first being reported here that the Mayor was planning to duck them out yet again during the Fox debate, each candidate came together (also first written about here) to show their unwavering support of continuing with their earlier written and verbal commitment to the Fox debate thereby leaving MPT swinging the wind. Yet, even after ensuring Fox execs that they would be at their studios with whistles on for their upcoming debate; after apparently being threatened to have the Mayor’s ad buy pulled if they went ahead with the debate, Fox decided not to bite the hand that fed them – even after earlier publicly expressing their discontent with this Mayor and her cohort Governor O’Malley – while then leaving their debate partner hi and dry while entering into an agreement to then be a part of the only debate left on the table – MPT’s. This awkward, confusing and shameful display of disgraceful politics and demonic business practices sickens most voters who are already tired of the obvious political corruption – leaving many scratching their head as to how these officials question why people cannot stand the political process and don’t go vote for the lesser of two evils half the time.
So as you can see, most debates and polls are skewed, either through favorable coverage or manipulated numbers; therefore never allow for such devious and underhanded tactics to go uncontested and determine the outcome of anything without your say – the voter! This country was built on the premise that the founding fathers – though not looking like many of Americans today – believed in and would ensure that a fair and balanced governmental system would be run by a process created by, and eventually decided by, the people! You have the opportunity to show each candidate what exactly a poll or a debate really means to you, by coming out to vote during this year’s Baltimore City Primary Elections over the next two weeks!
