Auntie’s Books at the Square is holding a special back to school storytime to help Spokane area children prepare mentally for the coming school year on Saturday, September 3.
One of the books that will be featured during the event is “We Love Our School!: A Read-Together Rebus Story” written by Judy Sierra and illustrated by Linda Davick.
According to the product description at Amazon,
“This picture book about the first day of school, featuring a frog, a duck, a mouse, and a snail, combines a story in rhyme with colorful graphic rebuses, making it a fun book for parent and child to share in the reading. Children about to enter kindergarten or first grade who long to be able to read will get a sense of accomplishment by “reading” the little rebus pictures in the story. Judy Sierra, author of ‘Wild About Books’, uses bouncy rhyme and rhythm as cues for the child to name the pictogram rebuses. Preschoolers will enjoy following the animals and their teacher, Tom Burkey (who is a turkey), through a happy first day of school.”
Sierra is a prolific author who has written many books for both children and adults. Spokane area parents may be familiar with her works such as “Celtic Baby Names” or “The Secret Science Project That Almost Ate the School.”
According to the Auntie’s web site, “Her acclaimed stories in rhyme include ‘Wild About Books’, an E. B. White Read Aloud Award winner; ‘Born to Read’; and ‘The Sleepy Little Alphabet’. Some of her other books that have tickled the funny bones of children are ‘Mind Your Manners, B. B. Wolf’ and ‘Tell the Truth, B. B. Wolf.'”
Davick has collaborated with authors on at least seven books aimed at young children. Parents may have seen her work in books such as “Kindergarten Countdown” or “Ready, Set, Grow!: A What’s Happening to My Body? Book for Younger Girls.”
According to Auntie’s, “Linda Davick is a graphic web site designer and innovative children’s book illustrator. Her vibrant computer art has illustrated three popular early learning picture books, ‘10 Trick-or-Treaters’, ‘10 Trim-the-Tree’ers’, and ‘10 Easter Egg Hunters’, all by Janet Schulman.”
The story time will start at 1:00 p.m. Auntie’s Books at the Square is located in downtown Spokane at 808 West Main Avenue on the Skywalk level of Riverpark Square in Suite 253. For more information, call (509) 456-4775.
